Y pipe question (UPDATE WITH SOLVED PROBLEM)

I have a really annoying rattle comming from the drverside area of my ypipe. My mechanic buddy (he only works on imports though so thats why I'm asking) says the rattle is becasue there is pipe inside the ypipe aswell? This is the first I have heard of this, is this true? And to get rid of this do I need a new ypipe?

This most certainly is true!

its called Double wall construction. When mine snapped at that location, the inner pipe was still okay. So the outer pipe was all that needed to be welded. You can physically see the two different pipes if the outer pipe is cut away or broken.

This is why our stock Y-pipe's are a choke and a joke.

I don't know if this would cause the rattling you hear, have you checked the more obvious things like heat shields?

I went out to my garage and checked out the stock y-pipe from my '96, and here are the pictures:

Thoes shots are down the collector to where both of the pipes come together. As far as I can tell, there isn't a second pipe inside the regular pipes, except where they come together. I would think that if thoes pipes were rattling inside there, the welds would be so loose that they would also be leaking.

Mabey I have a leak too? It is definatly the drivers side :( I will ask him again for use of his lift and take a closer look...

The pipes are double walled where they come off of the stock manifolds. When they come together to form the Y pipe they change to just 1 pipe.

I highly doubt they are rattling against each other in there. When I put on my headers I saw-alled off the stock pipes where they were double walled and beat them up pretty good, but they still didn't rattle against each other.

I'd say check the heat shields and make sure the bolts on your hangers are all tight. Also, check to see if the pipes are hitting that brace that runs under them after the S bend.

It was the Y-pipe! It had been hit hard (large dent) and the inner pipe was bouncing around inside! Its fixed, but get this....the shop copped of my cat to, and I have a straight pipe now! Must have been clogged, as I feel a signifigant hp and tourque gain! Also my flowmasters sounds freaking loud now! [img]graemlins/evilgrin.gif[/img]
