  • tranny or exhaust rattle/grind?

I got a rattle/grinding noise coming from underneath the car. When I'm under the car and tap the exhaust it does not rattle. The rattle/grind sound usually begins when I engage the cluth and slowly give it gas. At WOT it's fine but when I let off full throttle the sound comes back. I also notice that its usually worse after I open her up. It's very annoying. Has anyone else had these symptoms? I'm thinking its a tranny rattle because when I knock on the exhaust it sounds fine? I guess the next thing is to put it on jack stands and listen more closely.

I am willing to bet that it is the cat. Mine made a rattling noise when I first got it and thats what it was

More than likely it's your heat shield on the cat. Mine does the same thing. I'm going to take my car to the shop tomorrow to have the heat shield taken off the cat.

I'll try it but when I'm under the car it looks like the heat shield has more than enough space and when I bang the exhaust pipes I don't hear anything hitting it. The cat is new and when I tap it it sounds fine as well.

Sure there's enough clearance, but when you're on the gas and at WOT the sound vibration can make the heat shield rattle. It's a common occurence with Fbodies...

Iv had the same problem for almost a year now. Dealer couldn’t find it. It not the heat shields.
It embarrassing taking off from lights because its kinda loud and I don’t want people thinking I don’t take care of my car

The heat shield is two pieces, the second piece is up on the fire wall. You can see the joint there, there's a screw in it. Just get something, a piece of cardboard, paper, whatever, and stick it in between the outer edges of where the two pieces meet.
