will this straight pipe work

i searched on this, didnt find the answers i was looking for. will this work on my 97 camaro? i have a flowmaster 40 series muffler right now, and what is the funny smell that everyone talks about when you run a straight pipe? i also dont want power loss. i will be installing 3.42+lsd soon if that makes a difference.

It's going to smell REALLY bad. Also you WILL loose some torque on the bottom end but you'll make it back in the mid-high range. I have 3.73s and I can tell a difference in power loss. Right now I have a 40 series where my cat used to be. The tone on the F-Body with this setup is great, but it can smell REALLY bad. Good luck!

You get the smell because the cat converts CO2 into water, helping emissions. I believe the smell is CO2.

When you go with any free flowing exhaust, you will loose some low end power, but the power you gain in the mid-upper power band makes up for this greatly. Look at it like this, the only time you are using low end power is off the line, after that, your always in the upper RPMs, while racing, so it will help you more than hurt you.

I've straight-piped my 3.4 and am in the process of getting custom piping for the muffler. I didn't notice much difference in the low-end (it was always kinda bad), but the high-end difference is great! And (with the addition of a better intake) knocked about 1 sec off my 0-60. I say go for it. I only smell the smell when I'm low on gas, sometimes on a cold start, or if I've been driving for a really long time. I say go for it!
