    Oh, and the integrity of the latch question...

    I saw a site that cut out the entire back piece of metal. I didn't go that far for the latch issue. If you create two sperate ducts (leaving metal on the back side of the latch), the metal still has the rigidity

      As for bugs: Some of the gigantic dragon flies here in South Florida have ended up on the K&N filter (well, parts of them, the rest are splattered around) even without cut outs. Some sort of screen will be in order...
