I know. A felony is typically rape, murder, burglary, etc. It never occured to me until now but he was probably exaggerating to scare me into not doing it. But like I said before, by the tone of his voice, I can tell the authorites make a really big deal out of it if you are caught without a cat.

Absolutely. I think the fine is in the ball park of $5K. They are serious when it comes to this law. You could always try the excuse that it was like that when you bought the car.

haha - I had a straightpipe on my 91 Formula to an 80 series, never got any guff for it Cops wont waste their time with it. Never had a cop get on the ground to look underneath my car and I doubt anyone here has.

Well the likely-hood of a cop actually taking his time to get on his hands and knees itself is extremely slim to none. I'm just saying that IF you were to get caught with it, you could get in some serious trouble.

Yeah, but even if they do all they'll give me up here is a fix-it-ticket. But even to get out of that my friend does this all the time --- he takes hollowed cats and builds them around the pipe so it looks like the exhaust is going in the cat but infact its just a hollow case that the pipe goes through. Pretty damn tricky, works though.

haha, that doesnt matter to me, will the motor be effected negatively with a straight pipe? Is it true the 3.4 likes a little backpressure?

Your car needs some backpressure to a certain extent.

You could always just gut the cat, that way it looks like you have one, but it doesn't function.

Just read this topic and searched this out.

"Removal of catalytic converters:
The federal Clean Air Act [203 (a) (3) (A) and (B)] does not allow anyone to replace a catalytic converter with “replacement pipes”. Improper removal or installation of a catalytic converter by any individual could result in stiff fines and/or imprisonment. The only time when removal of a catalytic converter is allowed is when the vehicle is being shipped to a country that does not sell unleaded gasoline. The vehicle owner
must have a letter from the EPA authorizing the catalytic converter’s removal. Vehicles sent to Canada or Mexico are not eligible for this exemption."

I know most states can fine the person without a converter up to $2,500 and the shop that did the work up to $25,000. I'm not sure how they would fine someone who owns the car and removes it as well. Aftermarkets are allowed in most states, but state laws vary in terms and conditions of replacement w/aftermarkets.
