Personally I would get the Whisper Lid with the K&N first. After you have these, then get the CAI. This will help on your top end speed. It'll feel peppier on the highway which is always fun. It's a first basic mod that all people interented in performance should have. Also, read into the Free Ram Air Mod!! You should do this too. It makes a pretty big difference, especially if you add all of the above. This should take care of your intake, then work on the exhaust :D I think It'll be worth it if you find it used on this board. If you can't find it used, it's your call.My $0.02.

Personally, I can't justify the price of the CAI and/or a whisper lid.

      http://eric.virginia.com/install_university/installu_pages/freshman_year/free_ram _air_mod.htm

That's a free mod, does the same basic thing as the CAI, and takes about 15 minutes to do (maybe 30 or so if you haven't disassembled your airbox before).

On the underside of your whisper lid there's some fins... break them all off with a pair of pliars, and sand it down, and you have the same basic thing as a whisper lid.

Also take out your air silencer... the big baffle after your airbox lid, before the throttle body. Replace it with a piece of 3" PVC pipe.

Now that you've done all that stuff to your intake for free that woulda set you back $200+, you can go out and get yourself some Flowmasters or Edelbrock exhaust :D

EDIT: I wouldn't worry about water/snow getting past your air filter. I've heard of a few cases of people claiming water got through, but I honestly think it wasn't from that... I think they either had a hole in their filter, didn't close their lid properly, or something like that.
