• Difference between slp cai, and ftra?

I've decided to get a cai kit as my next mod and I'm trying to decide between the slp cai and the fast toys ram air kit. Obviously the ftra is more expensive than the slp kit but just by looking I can't really see many differences in the designs of either. They are both built the same more or less but the ftra is advertised as being the best, just curious if anyone has any opinions on which is better and why.

I personally like the super sucker- it just looks like it would work the best. If I'm wrong, then I'll change my views. But between the two you're thinking about, I'd go with the Fast toys. It comes with a block off plate in case it's flooding so you don't drown your engine. I think it's more preference though

Super sucker? Never heard of that...but I do like the block off plate on the ftra kit, however it wouldnt be hard to fabricate one for the slp kit anyway so its not a HUGE selling point for me. Just wondering if one or the other flows better basically, or if one or the other out performs as far as construction and build quality.

my advice?...DO NOT go with the ftra from fasttoys ...this was the first ram air system i had on my car until i switched to the functional SS hood ...it mounts in front of your radiator and blocks some of the air flow to it...making your car run hotter...and robbing any horsepower it would have created...i didnt notice any difference with this kit at all...it was a total waste of money...i'd go with slp, k&n..or a functional hood..i noticed a nice gain with my functional hood

the slp kit and ssra kit also mount in front of the radiator, is the ftra kit bigger than the others? What I mean is, does it block more air from passing over the radiator than other cold air kits.

Has anyone ever adapted an LT-1 style ram air system onto a 95-97 3.8 liter. I am asking because dangerous said he got a nice gain.

from the pics of both units the slp does not show a lower 'scoop' extension like the ftra. I am pretty sure that the car is a bit quicker whiie going over 60 mph (passing on freeway...yea, that's it...) with the ftra over stock airbox. lowend performance is the same as adding k and n and cutting out the bottom of airbox.
the stock ftra block off plate is also stainless steel. in order to use it you need to carry a torqs screw driver in car as well as 12mm? socket and wrench to loosen and lift airbox to slip plate in. I cut about 1/4" off of one side of block off plate so that it fits under airbox without having to lift airbox.

I have only had the ftra since the fall. pretty cool temps here in the NW. With 180* thermo car is at same 195* freeway, city, idle.
The real test will come in the summer.

Yeah I don't really see these things being too much of a hinderance as far as heat goes, now i just have to decide which one I want. Between the slp, ftra, and the ssra i dont see a huge distance except the ssra has the extension that puts the scoop right up front which in my head seems like it would make it work better than the others.

well, what sold me on the SSRA was it was inclosed. when i looked at the other ones, it looked like it had a plate to cover the radiator and thats it. seems like to me that the air could go around that and not into your intake

The SSRA is made of thin plastic and will bust into 100 pieces if you ever pull up to far and scrape the bottom of your car. Anything that would normally scuff your air dam (the black flap that hangs down the most under the front of your car) will scratch and possibly break your SSRA. The adaptor for the existing ram air kit made by SSRA is made of metal and is much tougher. I'd go with the Whisper Cold Air kit and the SSRA Adaptor.

that is not true. the plastic is not thin. and i have hit the curb with it and it only cracked down the edge which was easly fixed with JB weld

i stand by my opinion that its a great induction system

the ftraik has a scoop extension. I have never seen the ssra. the FT kit completly blocks off air other than thrue the main duct. (comes with foam weather stripping)

It works so good I may ditch it when I get a SC. I don't want to worry about a 6psi water vac that close to the ground on rainy days. (if i can incorporate the stock airbox with SC that is)
