I haven't had a cat on my car for quite a long time. It makes the exhaust note deeper and stronger down low, but at the same time it does make the high end rice sound more pronounced. It also depends on what kind of muffler you have. You will loose some low end torque but make it back up in the mid-high range.
Some people that live in areas who have required emissions testing will tell you it's illeagl to remove the cat or you can't pass emissions without it, and that is true. If you DON'T have emissions testing, GO FOR IT! 90% of all muscle cars around here run straight pipes and the cops never look twice. Of the 3 vehicles I've owned with open exhaust, I have never had a problem. GOOD LUCK.

Not that you should even attempt to do this but for me it completely got rid of my rice sound all together. But thats because i'm running a muffler directly off the ypipe I guess too. Whats going to happen if you cut it off? Your not going to beable to get your exhaust back on. No shop will weld it back up for you. You'll have to wait 2 or 3 weeks to order a cat. And your car will sit for all that time because it is too loud to drive around and it's a $2500 fine if you got caught. Which you will. Is it worth it to try and get rid of a rice sound? Not really, leave it alone unless your cat needs replacing because it's clogged.

That is not entirely true. There are SEVERAL shops around here that will work on exhaust and they don't give a damn what is done to it. The shop I took my car to cut my cat and installed my 40 series where it used to be. Before that they cut the cat and I ran open pipes for a few weeks. Now THAT is loud. TOO loud. Exhaust Pro, Midas, or many national chains WON'T work on altered exhaust, but most independently owned shops WILL. Call some places around town.
