What is the purpose of the MAF screan?

If I am right it is that screan right behind the last piece of black rubber coming out of the airbox and conects to the MAF sensor, I notice many people have in there sigs that they removed it, is there any bad stories? what will it make the car do? it is a screan.
The only thing I can see is that it can prevent things from geting sucked into the engine and maybe it helps to stop a back fire from catching.
I did the " Free Ram Air mod" and I have a K&N filter with the rased airbox, I may look into a Wisper lid once the summer comes around and I have $$ to spend.
Any sugestions?

The MAF screen is the Mass Air Flow sensor. It reads the amount of air coming into the engine, and the PCM uses that value to make adjustments to the Air/Fuel ratio.
What removing the MAF screen does, other than possibly removing the restriction it causes, I don't know, one of the guys who has it removed will have to tell you that.

No, the MAF sensor is BEHIND the screen. The screen is there to reduce the potential tubulance to improve the sensor performance.

Do a search, this is a HOT subject regarding its removal.

...this is a hot subject, but it also one that seems completley open. I am mean some people say it works others say no good. I have been debating as to whether or not to remove it. Doesn't SLP have one that allows more airflow? If so maybe it is safer to go with that. Anyway, anyone have it?

.....never mind. It seems SLP only has the whole MAF unit and only for the LS1. Interesting, that SLP's high-flow MAF still has a screen though. Any alternatives?

Agreed. Some people have had good experiences with removing the screen, others haven't. Me personally, I removed mine & have had no problems as a result of the screen's removal.

Please do a search on this topic, like Robert said, it's a pretty hot topic.
