• New cat-back, whats with popping?

I recently got my cat-back system installed custom for i have a 3.4L. Its only like 10 minutes old, but at about 3500 RPM it pops, it is not the rice either. I get the rice sound at like 4500+ RPM. But it only happens sometimes. Is it because it is all brand new material?
Do new mufflers need time to wear in along with the rest of it?
Did anybody else get that popping when they got their exhaust installed?

(p.s. I got 3" mandrel bent piping from a 2.5" out cat (all converted)and 2.5" inlet and dual outlet on a Dynomax SuperTurbo muffler.)

plz help htx.

Your muffler will sound better as it gets broken in. As for the rice sound: it just happens on the 3.8, can't really avoid it without extensive modification. I don't know about the 3.4 though. I haven't heard a lot of sound clips of them.

thanks, i hope the pop goes away.

other than that, my car feels a hell of a lot better than with my stock exhaust. it feels a lot smoother and has a better, cleaner acceleration.

plus i did know about the sad case of the rice we all get with our 6's. :( too bad eh? Just that popping seemed odd.

The pop won't go away. All the pop is from what I've learned is the computer making adjustments to the air/fuel ratio. I've had my exhaust for a while now and it still pops at idle. Don't worry about it, it's normal

The pop is from a lack of backpressure. Like when a trans-am car shoots flames out the exhaust. That would also be excesive fuel but the same principal. A lot of race cars do it. That's not going away unless you make your exahust more restrictive.

The rice sound will go away a little as the exhaust breaks in. It probably sounds more rice in the car than listening from the out side. I've listened to my exhaust on film and it's not ricey, but it don't sound like a V8 either. On the inside I could swear it sounded rice. On film it sound like a Lemans car.

when I had my 3.4 the only exhaust mod I did was install a flowmaster (what series, I have no idea) with dual outlets and dual quad tips. WHen I started it, it sounded really good, almost like a V8. What I REALLY loved was when I would drive and it would shift into overdrive (i guess) and lower the RPMS to cruising speed. The exhaust would have the perfect sound. It was usually around 1600 or a little higher I think.

so the odd popping is becuase of too much flow? or why does it do that? once my computer resests will it eventually not happen as much? cuz it sucks that it pops.

as for the rice, ya i cant wait till my exhaust breaks in and sounds better. Mine doesnt rice out till pretty high in the rpms (around 4500+)which i like a lot.

ya but who would want a restrictive exhaust?
ur engine almost always will like more flow up to a certain extent that is.

I dunno about the backpressure thing. Mine would do it whenever I even had the stock exhaust. Don't worry about it, it's just the computer adjusting. And what I mean by the computer adjusting to the air/fuel ratio is this: The throttle blade opens up whenever you step on the gas, thus more fuel can be added because more air is coming in. The reason why it pops is because whenever your in neutral and bring it up high rpms and let off the gas, the RPMs don't fall down slowly like they would whenever you are moving (the rpms drop like a rock when you are in neutral) because the engine has no load on it. That's why it will only pop whenever you are in neutral or park

Yup, they make them custom for the 3.4, that's what mine are.
