  • Making Homemade CAI, Got Q's

First off, I DID do a search but could not find any answers to my questions.

I have a 97 RS which basicly is a 3.8 without the lid design. (which means it intakes from the front driversside corner.) My questions are these.

#1 On that black plastic thing thats attached to the Upper Radiator/Fan cover and to the Throttle Body (The most visable part when you open your hood.), there is a wire and a connector that connects into it. What is this? Where can I move it too on the CAI?

#2 What is the size of our throttle body's, also how many inches will it take to fit with a rubber boot?

#3 Are there any other materials I can find relatively cheap to craft my Homemade CAI with without using PVC? I wanted to chrome a metal but metal also might get too hot...

#4 Whats the best design? List a part list and installation steps if you can please, also a total cost wouldn't be to bad.

#5 Unrelated, but can I switch to a straight throttle body?

I have a homemade cai. It's rather simple, but pretty good. I took part of a landscape blower elbow (b/c I'm a landscaper) and connected that to some extendable plastic piping I found at Autozone, and attacted an air filter. And the part you are talking about w/ the wires is probably the air intake temp sensor. You'll need to take that out of the old intake and make a whole for it to fit into the new one you put together. Just don't damage it unless you wanna replace it. So... all in all, you'll need a 90 degree rubber elbow (lowes or home depot should have one), some 3 inch tubing, and an cone air filter. Very easy to do, but need alil imagination and a creative mind. You should be able to do it for like $50. Good luck.

You can buy a grommet for the air intake temp sensor at autozone and dremel out a little hole in your intake piping for that. Fit the grommet around the iat sensor and then wedge it in.

i know its not what you asked for, but its something to consider. for all the money youll be spending to do this, you could just get a real slp cai used. honestly, to do the homemade one correctly you will probably drop about 75 bucks. i mean, thats assuming you go with a k&n cone filter and some decent hardware. check out these auctions:
