  • Q: concerning muffler shop and modified cat/exhaust...

Ok, say I have a 2001 v6 firebird and the exhaust has been modified (completly) with aftermarket products. This theoretical 'System' maintains stock tubular manifolds and Y pipe...but has a 3in/3in aftermarket cat, 3 in stainless steel LT1 exhaust from S pipe to tail pipes and maybe even a bullet resonator in the I pipe as well. Everything is clamped together. For some reason the system is not setting off any, um, emissions codes...and there is no physical 'sim' on the rear O2 sensor. Can the muffler shop man weld the joints for me...um, I mean, this theoretical car...or will he tell me to take a walk because the car is not 8 years old yet nor does it have 80,000 miles?
I am just thinking ahead....to the not to distant future when a delivery man drops off the above mentioned parts that will be installed in my garage...but may have to outsource some welding...cat to y pipe, inline resonator for the I pipe, etc,. I realize the bulk of these catback systems are 'bolt on' but this is V8 gear on a v6...and the resonator adds two more joints in the system.
Or, are all the young aged modified cars out there just running around with clamps?

My cars have always been much older...B body mopars, GMC 1/2 tone, that kind of stuff and have never been in this exhaust situation before.

Should I just plan on taking Y pipe in to shop with the above mentioned GMC half tone and ask them to weld the cat to the y piped and s pipe and to also cut and weld in the resonator and then take them back to Project Unleashed HQ? (a tad worried about fitment this way...all piecemeal and what not versus clamping everything in place and then welding the fitted system.)

    TIA for any guidance. g

They will definitely weld it for you. That is not out of their reach as far as staying within state and federal regulation of what to do and not do. They would not be able to do things like pull the cat out and gut it or replace the cat with a straight pipe. Welding a system in place that is already there would be something that they would do.

OK, thanks guys. It occured to me I could still do the fitment of the bullet muffler- I pipe insertion myself...with a measuring tape and a sharpie for marking lines. I still have to take cat and y pip in seperatly If I want those welded first...then cut the flange on LT1 S pipe and mate with cat...temp clamp, take car to shop for welding, unless I get a flanged cat...
But anyway...thanks for the heads up.
