Opening the electronic throttle?

Posting this before I mess anything up..

I want to spray throttle body cleaner down the intake of my 2001. However, due to the electronic throttle, there's no cable to tug to open it up.

Can I safely stick a soft rod or something in there to pry/prop open the throttle, or will I strip something in the actuator if I try that? Is there a set voltage that will open up the throttle, or does it work more like a stepper motor?

it's alright to do something like a screwdriver as far as i can tell...thing is, just should probably hold it open with a finger or two after you initially get it open with the screwdriver. but you SHOULD be okay as far as a softer metal getting and keeping it open. but be VERY careful...it'll SNAP back on ya

Drew, surely you haven't forgotten what happens to fingers when that throttle plate comes back? :eek: :mad: [img]graemlins/crybaby.gif[/img] We recomend wearing gloves, as thos throttles plates have potential to do some mean damage.

YOURE FINGERS!? are we forgetting that time when my throttle blade almost claimed 2 of my fingers!? :( ANYWAYS if you really wanna clean it Turn the key to the RUN position but dont start the car...have a friend or use a heavy object to push the gas pedal down and TA DA! OPEN throttle body. I dont think id used youre fingers or a screw driver might bend something or sever something that you might be attached to [img]tongue.gif[/img]

I think it was JASON who had his foot on the gas when I tried to hold it down, and the he let off!!
i coulda lost two very important fingers!!! :mad: ;)

the best way to clean this thing would be to simply remove it and use a toothbrush and the throttle body cleaner. of course, you need the special gasket and you will loose a bit of coolant.

be careful of the maf sensor -- it is expensive to replace.

Thanks for the info Jason, car in run + pedal down is what I was looking for as the easy / safe way to hold it open.

F1GT: Ain't broke, don't fix it in _this_ place? Take a look at the mod lists in everyone's sigs! :-P

Yes, if it ain't broke don't fix it. It's like saying I got 5k miles on my new ride, going to replace my fuel filter or the like. When you look at people's mod list, that's what they've done. Not just doing something like cleaning the TB, just for the heck of it. I mean, what if u didn't post anything here and you clip 2 fingers??? Ya know?

Hey, it's just maintenance. With 32k on the odo in the hot dusty desert, time to get stuff like cleaning and diff fluid done. I don't waste time and money for the fun of it.

While this isn't exactly the same variety of hands-on work as my day job (cruise missiles), I do know enough to ask for help doing something the first time, so I don't break it..

Enough here before it starts in a flame war. BTW, Jason, everything worked great. Didn't have a helper, so a rubber mallet and a dumbbell worked fine to prop the throttle open with the key in run (but car not running, I'm not that crazy!) Fingers were all in place for my date later that afternoon.
