It is highly conterversal. Some people love it, and some people hate it.
Basicly on some cars it makes an improvement on others it makes the car run bad. My philosophy on it is that GM put it there for a reason, and how much HP could it hold back, probably not more than 1 hp being highly optimistic.
Do a search and you will find lots of info about it.
On a 99 removal of the screen should cause no problems. If it for some reason makes it idle funny though, you can easily pop it back in. The only thing holding it in is a small circular spring clip. I removed mine
I took mine out as well. It tripped a high maf output reading and the idle is ruff, but I like how its changed the tone a little. I think Im getting slightly worse gas with it out. but not 100% sure just of yet. Ive left it out. all it does is straiten air. to me its better on the throttle response and worse on gas ( if u use a lead foot at all ) but better if u just cruze.
edit. Im gonna get my car redynoed soon, I'll put it back after 2 runs wait and do 2 more.

I took it out and the computer started *****in. On my car I just took a knife to it and pulled it out. I'm gonna put on a my throttle body spacer and port the throttle body and see what happens
97 Camaro RS

\"Just a V6 huh?, let\'s go find out how slow it is\"
Not a huge fan, IMO the chances of something going wrong is larger than the possible gains from it. I have however heard some good things, just nothing "good" enough for me personally to do it, like I said my opinion.

i remember dominic dyno-ing his car b4 and after when he took out the maf screen. i remember he said he gained 5 rwhp and 10 rwtq. i pulled mine out, and it made slight more noticable power.

Yeah. Ive driven with mine out now for a good 1500 miles and I think the power isnt worth the gas. cause thats what it seems to do. Increase the Air fuel mixture to be more power efficent- less gas efficent. the power to me is noticable and I would believe 5hp 10tq. Over all review, not worth it. I used to get about 24mpg now Im back down to like 18- like when I 1st got it and had a lead foot.
'97 here, removed it 2000 miles ago, I don't get any worse gas mileage then with it... I would speculate that people have more of a lead foot without it... thus explaining any decrease in gas mileage. I took it out and the car sounded better, it revved slightly more freely... and it gave me a slightly rough idle... just barely.
IMO it was worth it, and thinking logically, it is a useless waste of power.. doesn't make sense.
Plus, I hear it holds back upwards of 150 CFM... if that's true, anything over 225-250 Hp... should see "big" gains.. maybe 5 Hp... not bad though for removing a stupid screen.
You'll really just have to try it out to see what happens... it's different for all cars.

i have a slightly lopey idle when i first start the car, but nothing drastic. i noticed more power at higher speeds, highway driving, and a little better fuel economy while cruising at highway speeds. in town, i still get 15 mpg since i love stepping on it a lot. also, you will notice mroe of a difference the more mods you already have done to the car, especially if you have exhaust. you'll gain a little low-end torque back, and of course make the top-end even stronger.

i removed it and i don't have the rough idle. mine is 99 too. i didn't notice any gain, but i don't think you would feel a 5 hp gain though. what i did notice was a change on the exhaust tone. it's beatifull, i like it a lot. i followed some guidelines of someone of this forum to removed the screen. i cannot remember his nickname but, all you have to do is warm up the car a little like 2 o 3 min at idle. then remove the airbox lid,the air box silencer if you have one (i have a straigh black home depot pvc pipe )and you would see the screen. look for the clip that is holding the screen. then take something small (could be a pen) and start pulling this clip. since you already warmed up the car a little, the screen should come out easy.
hope this help
