I installed the 2 1\2 inch flow system on my car today and am very pleased with it. It sounds excellent, power is nice, and fit is perfect. Its all your personal preference. I chose to go with the 2.5. I think you would be more than happy with it.
personally i think 2.5 is nice, but 3" is better ;) if you want ill go grab you some sound clips with a 3" catback flowmaster system (i have a digicam and i can just run outside and do some recordings.)

i have no backpressure LOL. at least very very little...

did you lose any power with the 3" system?

you never lose any power with any size pipe. what happens is that as you let the engine breathe more the powerband moves up. so instead of getting power from say 2000 - 4500 you get power from 3000 - 5500. that kinda thing. it does mean that you have less power down low (take off rpms, say 1000 or so) but the car will breathe better up high. im working on a system that maximizes both the low end tq and high end hp, ill keep everyone posted.

do you still get that popping sound when you rev. it?

actually, i even get a pop or two with the cutout open which is a little wierd to me, but it might be a random misfire, not sure. but i get less pops with the cutout open than with it closed, and i get less pops now that i have no cat than before when i did have one. but the exhaust system will pop regardless. even 4th gen Z28's exhaust pops when you put an aftermarket exhaust on it. (ive heard one).
anyway. ill see if i can get a recording with my camera when i get home today (going home early so i should have plenty of time and everyone will actually be able to SEE the car LOL.
you should go w/ 3''. i have 2.75'' on my car and i didn't lose any backpressure and my topend increased a lot. if you can get a z28 take-off you will have best of both worlds, but i think 3'' will be fine.

as said before, you will GAIN not lose power going to 3". Your power band will shift up a little, but the top end easily makes up for any low end loss (which isn't much-- i mean really how long does it take you to get to 3000 rpms for example if you're trying to race). Plus 3" is definately deeper. I'm happy with mine.
mines actually a brand new z28 replacement pipe that napa auto parts sells. it cost about $100 and it comes as one long pipe that connects from your cat to your muffler, all mandrel bent. if you go to the store have them look in their book and it will be for a 95 lt1. there is a diagram in there that shows exactly what you need. if you need the part number let me know.

if you are an aggressive driver like me :D you won't have a problem at all. The only time you feel the 'loss in backpressure' is when you are driving lightly and the rpms stay low. Once you start to press the pedal, you simply don't feel any loss. Car definately feels stronger overall IMO.
