Stock Air lid question...

What is the reasoning for GM to put the baffles and silencer on the stock air lid? Is it to simply quiet down the noise? Does it increase gas mileage any? The only thing I've done to my car is put the whisper lid on and it doesn't sound that much louder at all from the stock setup.

Its just there to quiet the intake yes. You get more of a sucking wooshing noise without it, which I find very nice :D

Once upon a time in Detroit...

GM was designing the intake for the TA/Z28, and they had to figure out a way to make it slower than the Corvette. So they took the design the engineers originally had, then added a bunch of BS to it. After that, they just basically copied the design for the V6... and that is how we inherited an idiotic intake ;)

Do the baffles and silencers take away noticeably or significantly from the power that could produced by say, that of the whisper lid.... cause I can't really tell a difference between installing the whisper lid and that of the stock lid I had before. The whisper lid may have improved the power of the car just a lil bit...

They could've just welded a two inch block underneath the gas pedal (to keep it from hitting the floor) if they wanted it slower...and leave our lids alone. [img]smile.gif[/img]
Instead of making the TA slower, why couldn't they add something to just make the Vette faster? [img]graemlins/dunce.gif[/img] I'm sure there was a cost efficient mod out there (or create one).

The silencer is that rectangular thingie between the mouth of the air lid and the throttle body. It's like a big box where air gets diverted, creating less noise... guess chevy thought noise was a bad thing!!!
