• 98-02 Cold Air Intake - Is there Demand?

Greetings all! I am new to this forum, but certianly not new to the GM scene (although, my FWD GM currently out number my RWD 3-1 ).

My partner and I run a small business which specializes in designing and selling functional Cold Air Intake systems for some of the 'less popular' models of cars (like the Beretta, of which I am a fan). We also do custom intakes for just about any car.

Anyhow, I had customer contact me about doing a cold air intake for a 99 3.8 Auto Camaro. I spent about 1/2 the day Saturday and threw something together for him, and it turned out pretty nice. I was talking with him, and he mentioned that it was pretty hard to find a decent intake system for that engine/year that didn't cost an arm and a leg - so I decided to feel out the demand on something like this, and if I can get a few interested parties, then I think they'd be a go.

Here is a link to a few snapshots I took of the design:
    http://www.tranzgenic.com/intakes/38fbody

It's made from mandrel bent 3" T6061 polished aluminum tubing and the filter sits down in the fender under the drivers headlight.

This kit would retail for about $159.

    So, whatcha think?

    Eggcellent.... ;)

    Good setup, and price!

....Make sure to include something to block off the hot air from the radiator. Like what the K&N Aircharger has. You know, that replaces the Factory Airbox. Make it look neat in there.

if you could get befor and after dyno numbers you would get a much greater crowed.

most that drive these cars are still in high school and looking for the most BANG for da buck. dyno graphs would prove it

\"Well, we don\'t care how bad-*** some dude\'s N/A Honda S2000 motor is; if you go up against 900+ pushrod ponies and 750 pounds of earth-shaking torque with a wrong-wheel-drive econobox, you\'re gonna get a fast and furious old-school ***-whipping.\"

I know it retails for 159, but what is his price, or is that his to, then heck it is no deal, it is the same as all other CAI kits.

That is only his price, since no one else makes it. How is that no deal? It is $100 Cheaper than the new K&N Aircharger, and alot more free-flowing & Better in bringing in cold air that a Whipser Lid.

I always like to see new products for the F-bods. But more info is needed.

Well, again guys, this was just an idea 2 days ago - I havn't exactly had the time to run it to the dyno yet ;) I have dynoed simalar intakes on the 2.8/3.1/3.4 engines and they gain anywhere from 4-8WHP depending on mods.

I'll prolly need another local test car for that, or at the very least a factory air box that hasn't been modified (this fellow had his all cut up for "better flow")

that looks like a pretty nice setup, cant wait to see the dyno numbers if you can get some. I have been thinking lataly my whisper lid isnt the greastest flowing intake and will try something else out if its prooven to be better.

It will be a tough fight making CAIs for the lid'ded 98+'s, there are lids showing seriously surprising improvements, and they can be purchased quite cheaply. Good luck to you!

Has anyone dynoed one of the "lid" units yet?

If so, anyone have a link to the dyno chart?

Hey, after I get the money from my job this summer, I will definatly look into this. However, a dyno would be real nice to have....

This is actually a real good price because you don't have to buy the lid.

I believe I spent $159 on my lid from http://www.thunderracing.com/ and then another $199 for my cold air induction from http://www.slponline.com. This one is just $159.

I am wondering if it flows as good though. The SLP unit sits right above the air dam that runs below the car.

It looks a little strange without any kind of lid there though.

I am always happy to see more aftermarket for the 3.8. So it is good to see.
