  • V6's in GM High Tech!!

Just picjed up the new edition of GM hi tech(oct 2002). It was a gif with se[t edition of popular hot rodding and low and behold in the back there is an article about V6's.(3.8L that is)

The article covers throttle body mods. They detial that a company now bores and hones the TB/MAF unit and reprograms the maf to work with the stock comeputer but boosts flow by over 100CFM. The recalibration keeps the engine from running lean( a plus for us guys without the ability to tune yet)b/c of more air coming in. GMHT dynoed the car and it showed a gain of 6RWHP and 13 ft/lbs of torque at the RW at max power. The gains in torque down low were unbeleviable. it jumped from 166 ftlbs at 2000RPM all the way up to 201 ftlbs and the HP curve was up all over averagine a 10HP jump all the way across the curve!
    just thoght this was cool

How did they recalibrate the MAF?

I "recalibrated" my MAF sensor by replacing it with a 99+ one.

      Thrasher had something like this.
Stock bored out 2 mm for a 'high flow' of 67 mm
      Reprogrammed maf etc
Dyno gains were only a couple of hp, I'll have to buy that one now

Ok guys- I've got the issue sitting in front of me. Here's the skinny...
              1. It is Ram Air Technologies (RAT) who is doing this mod.
              2. TB/MAF is sent to Extrude Hone for Polish, then AccuFab for finish boring, and installation of a larger throttle shaft.
              3. Airflow is increased by over 100CFM! Final touch is to recalibrate the meter to operate on 3800II v6. (They don't say how)
              4.Test subject...96' Camaro w/ headers,exhaust, and intake mods...
              5. On the dyno, "Though the peak hp gain of 6 hp might seem insignificant, the RAT TB/MAF offered as much as 10 hp at various rpms. Also take a look at the extra 13-14 lbs.-ft. of torque offered by the stage 2. Gaining 10 hp at the top is nice, but adding power ALL the way through the rev range is even more impressive."
              6. RAT also offers an adjustable fuel regulator, and a set of underdrive pulleys for the camaro V6.

This seems to be pretty sweet!

                ????????????????
ok i'm confused. RAT has had that throttle body out for years and it never showed that much of a gain. one of the grand prix people also found out that they didn't even reprogram the MAF. maybe GMHTP had a slow month and so they printed this from a couple years ago.
i was swimming in the carribean. animals were hiding behind the rocks except for the little fish, but they told me the squid\'s trying to talk to me. oink, oink. where is my mind?

Well, im gonna call RAT today and get the skinny on prices and if they are in fact goin out of business(there site said they wer no longer selling to the general public...) Ill post something on it later. And if u do look at the mag, i think its funny as hell.... They have a SLP CAI and they use a 1LE elbow of a LT1 and jst have it clamped extra tight and it has all kinda bugles and ripples and looks all nast and prolly flows like total *** . prolly killed the advanteges of having the CAI anyways....

what kinda camaro was it. if it's the one i'm thinking about from years ago it was brian hood's car and it's a black rs with some nice wheels lowered. i wonder if they just misread the dyno back then when it only said 1rwhp gain.

It was a 96' V6 camaro. From the B&W pic it looks like it is a red base coupe w/ stock rims. They did mention in the article that "previous testing had shown that Stage 2 TB/MAF worked on stock motors..." Maybe that was refering to the old article??? There's no time / date stamp on the dyno sheet in the article, so I can't tell when it was done...

after repeated attempts to reach RAT over the span of 30 mins yesterday and an hour today all i get is an answering machine.... if anyone lives near there or knows anything pass along the info... long distance to cali from NC is a biatch.

Don't bother with RAT. They are one of the worst companies I have ever heard of. They had some cool products, but their customer service did them in. I wouldn't send them any money and expect anything.

The only TB modifications I know about now are at www.zzperformance.com
