  • Failed emissions

well i failed emisions today. i was way under with my CO and HC but my NOx was 3.1110 to an allowed 2.0 My engine was warm when i took it, but i hadn't driven it very far. One of my friends suggested just taking it for a longer drive before i go again. Does this sound right?
according to the printout my air/fuel ratio is between 1% and 3% lean. That and a egr system malfunction as well as a catlytic converter failure are their suggestions. My cat is brand new so i don't think that's it. I'm gonna go try tommorrow after i go for a spirited drive. Any suggestions?

I always have bad luck w/ emissions/inspection. My 01 TA failed this yr b/c both high beam bulbs were burnt out. Annoying but the dealer replaced them for free.

But a warm cat works alot better. So try a good drive before taking it to be tested.

Had a tuneup lately? That might help.

Take it for a fairly long drive (20 mins+) before going there - make sure the cat is warm.

i sure am lucky florida doesn't have inspections...

altough next year i am going to NY for college and they have inspections, but i don't think i have to register my car in NY, because it's under my parents name here in FL... so that's a relief

took it for a good drive, still failed th NOx 2.3 out of an allowed 2.0. gonna take off my cold air and try again. $160 for a new egr valve is a bit much at the moment if i can avoid it.

                  Mr Man,

We've managed to fool emissions inspections by dumping a off the shelf container of isoprobyl alcohol into the gas tank (rubbing alcohol). Basically you add it in at about a 2/3 to 3/4 tank and it should "thin out the mix" well enough to get you too pass.

Drive around 10 minutes, dump it in, drive around 10 minutes more and then inspect.

It won't hurt your vehicle but it only tends to work if your "barely failing".

                  Hope this helps.
Not a problem, just a challenge...
