Well, I used to have a 3' exhaust setup, and well, in my opinion, there were some pros and cons:

Pros:
*Great, and I mean GREAT exhaust sound. Use it with an American Thunder exhaust and people will basically be able to hear you a block away coming.

Cons:
*3 inch = more weight on the car ( in my opinion ). I would take longer to take off, leading to the next con
*Loss in torque. No matter how much I would floor it, damn car would take forever to haul *** .
*You'll probably get rattles underneath the car from the cat to exhaust pipe. If you don't mind a little rattle, then ignore this one.
*Get's loud inside the cabin, meaning if you like to listen to music at a moderate level, oh boy, good luck.

Pretty much, if your looking for your car to sound close to a V8, go with the 3 inch setup. The 2 and a half isn't that bad, but you'll most likely not experience any of the cons for the 3 inch setup ( in my opinion ). Honestly, I would have kept my 3 inch setup if it wasn't for the dumpass LAPD here along with California's strick emmission law's.

You are gonna get mixed feelings about this.
It's up to you...

2.5" will give a solid power gain and good sound.

3" wil give you a deeper tone and more top-end (at the cost of low-end)

What is your driving style?

Daily driver, w/ some racing?
Or just a racer?

I just installed the flowmaster american thunder made for the 3.8. it is not very loud at all I have heard that it needs to break in. I havent really tested it for performance gains though popular hot rodding put one on there 3.8 and gained 11hp. the 3" sounds bad at high RPM. I went with the 2.5 because I thought for my set up it would do just fine. I would only go with 3" if I was gonna super or turbo charge in.thats my opinion. hope it helps.

3" here. Sounds great, not too much low end lost, gained a bunch of top end. Well worth it. Personally, I wouldn't even consider going 2.75", let alone 2.5".

For reference...

2.25 dual equals flow rate of single 2.75"
2.50 dual equals flow rate of single 3"
so on and so forth.

However, if you choose to take the extra step of an X-pipe, you will have a better effeciency due to scavenging.
Not too many X-pipe'd single exhausts out there.

I've seen none of the cons that InZane4all with my 3" exhaust. I say go for the 3 inch.

The only thing that's gone wrong with my exhaust is the cat's throwing a code.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe these 2 were related in some strange twisted way...? Maybe the extra 15lbs of weight had a lot less to do w/ it than the loss of the lbs of torque?

I'm going with Squirts on this one. I got three and I love it. I only lost a little low end torque, and that is only because I haven't done the SLP CAI I want to. Go for three!

I've been thinking about doing a 2.25" True-Dual as well.
Hurry Dominic!
I won't get your same things.
And Bliggida, where did you get your info from?

Let's face it, the gain in top end is well worth any possible loss in low end. Those of us with aftermarket converters especially don't have to worry about the low end. ;) A lot of people have been going with 3" setups lately, and I've heard nothing but good things. It will make you trap higher going to a 3" setup, and consequently you will yield better 1/4 times. The '60s don't suffer, especially if you had wheelspin to begin with.

3" here, with 3" hiflow cat... absolutely awsome...

minor tourque loss, but then i installed the SLP CAI, and boom more power than i could have hoped for (well not really, i hope for 400hp magically appearing, but it never happened)

p.s. it sounds soooooo good... dont even think about 2.5 or 2.75
