What air intake gives you bather horsepower gain ?
Originally posted by grayman: cool, thanks for the heads up 'dangerous.
It just seems so spooky having the nostrils right there and then right into an upside down airbox.
see mine's a little different..the air doesnt come in and then straight down into the air box..it goes to the back of the hood first..then all the way down these chanels to the front of the hood where the air box is..they may handle water somehow by doing that
Thank you for all the info and your opinions I think that I will save up some $ and get a ram air hood first and the get the correct air intake for that
That sad I found this hood on the web and I’m sure to buy it when I get the $ I think is the best looking one there, and IS original (now the secret is out) let me now what you think abut it
I'd say any cold air intake that is in the fenderwell or before the radiator on our V6's will net you maybe at the most 5 horsepower at the wheels. (7-8 hp at the flywheel) I'd say an underhood intake would be sucking in warmer air most of the time and would be a little less hp than the previous one mention. Just a drop in performance filter would see very minimal gains....1 horsepower if you're lucky. ;)
an air intake will lessen the life of your filter or require (K&M)
more cleaning as the dirt and all foreign matter including
water will get sucked up easier into your engine...as it is close to the road.
More dirt in filter means more air. that is a good thing. get a re usable filter such as k and n.
About the aftermarket hood...
I am not trying to squash your hood idea but some research on any particular hood is a good thing to invest in. They are not all equal. they never seem to fit perfectly and some of the 'large, multiple heat extractor hoods' (similar to the one you posted) have so much material 'missing' that they can flex and crack the paint. For real. not messing with you.
Do you know about 'free ram air'? You know, where you cut holes in the nostril 'hood latch bulkhead?' That DOES work. It mimmics the factory 'firehawk' method of ram air.
Also, just doing free airbox mods on the 'airbox cars' works great. (gut bottom of airbox and remove stock air bellows and replace with smooth bellows) check out my site for guides and info on airbox mods.
Most aftermarket hoods will require either a proprietary airbox, such as the suncoast hoods, or a modified 'stock airbox' such as the raised WS6 air box (or firehawk...i forget)
Just be careful when choosing a hood. try to read reviews on them. check out the v8 camaro/firebird message boards as well. you will see what I mean.

Well I got my whisper ram air installed. It's really good in the high rpm's. I can just fly by my friends stock camaro now that I have this intake setup.
-Whisper ram air intake
-Whisper airbox lid
-K&n hi-flow Filter
next up is the exhaust

well heres something that know one talked about its almost like the k&n Generation II FIPK but better no engine heat can go around it i my self was thinking of getting this for my camaro sins i got a funcshinal ss hood http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d3...kl/15958Cl.jpg

Yeah but that kit is not made for the v6. It is for the v8 which has a centered intake unlike the 3.8's offset intake. It would probably be fine for a supercharged car though.

i always used to think it's the other way around..which means cleaner your filter , more air flow.. </font>
What I mean to say is that opening up and enlarging the intake ports/intake surface of the Air intake system allows for more air to be drawn through the ports. Along with the air is dust and stuff. More airflow = more dust. The dust and crud is stopped by the filter, though.
think about porting heads and intake and exhaust. You are making the PORTS bigger to allow for more flow. Increasing pressure of a fluid or gas through a 'port' will also increase flow, but after a certain point a bigger port is needed. get it?
The other reputed benifit of some of the air intake systems is 'ram air' (fresh air that is routed directly to the intake system) and 'cold air' (air that comew from outside the engine compartment OR air that is routed more directly to the air intake system such as a smooth bellows)
In other words, if the air intake filter system did not allow any air to pass through it then it would remain clean and free of dust.
