  • New exhaust...right sound?

    Hi all....
Picked up my 2002 bird yesterday from the shop, who put in a Flowmaster American Thunder cat back for me. Now, I'm under the impression (since it was american thunder, and not force II) that it was the 40 series muffler... which Summitt Racing confirmed. Is this the louder of the 2 muffs?
Now, I'm fully aware that this is no 8.cyl, BUT... the sound is awfully low, and hollow. Kinda like it's burning rice (but not really).
Is this normal? And...will a high flow cat make a MAJOR improvement in the rumble?
The performance is 2nd to none....it's awesome! much MUCH better / smoother... but I am after that deep dark rumble!
    Any suggestions? ---Thanks.

You buy it new? Give it time to break in.

If you got the am. thunder, then you have a 80 series muffler. The 80 series is a dual outlet muffler and the 40 is a single outlet. Throw a high flow cat on too, pick one up new for 50-60$, that will make it louder and a little deeper, and as kbeezy said, you gotta let it break in, theres really no set time, it will get better every week. ive got the am. thunder, magnaflow high flow cat, and pacesetter headers. If you go with that setup you will be happy i think. I havn't gotten anything but compliments out of mine.

it needs time to burn in. you'll notice over the next month a tone change.

            thanks to all....
I'm having a hard time searching for a magnaflow cat in the $50-$60 range. Where do I go.. or.. Any other brand names out there? I don't know too much 'bout cats.

flowmasters sound better over time. i have the same exhaust on my car and i wasn't crazy about it at first but give it a little bit of time and it only sounds better. also it sounds a lot better when your driving it then it does just revving it.

for the high flow cat go to ebay. they're a dime a dozen on there. catco or magnaflow. you should find plenty of them

Does it have to be a direct fit? Or can I get a universal fit for the cat?

I had my flowmaster American thunder put on yesterday and couldn't be any happier. The performance is incredible and looks sharp.
