• The sound of the Mustang GT vs American Thunder.

I really need some opinions on a Catback system which I am planning to get soon.

I have a 1998 Y87, W68 Firebird. I was planning to get the American Thunder Cat Back.

I like the sound of the newer mustang gt's. That tone is about right, not to loud yet has the muscle car tone to it.

My question to you guys is, will the American Thunder Catback be much louder than the Mustang gt's?

How do these two sounds compare?

    Thanks alot.

ford spends lots of money making the v8 stang sound great .. there are many die hard bowtie boys that will even tell ya a stang sounds better than an LS1 or even an LT1

i dont think any V6 f-body will come close to the sound quality of a gt .

BTW: im one of thoes guys that loves the sound of the GT  .. too bad i love the f-body

to answer your question i think the american thunder cat-back would be louder than a stock gt. Though the same sound you will not have.

Ya they sound nicer than most other LS1s but still not as nice as even a cobra with flowmasters. THe 3800 on the has the sound that mimicks a GT with just flows down low but anything above 3k nad the V6 sound domantes the exhaust note. Best way to discribe it is it changes from a GT sound down low to a Nascar rasp up high, at least that is what my car does. I have the 3inch American Thunder catback for the LS1 on my car with a Catco cat. All i need is headers and my car will sound better than some LT1s.

Yeah ford actually designed the motor to sound good... you aren't going to get that sound out of a 3.8. Maybe a 3.4, but not a 3.8. Those things sound like bumble bees up top.

And a nice sounding GT sounds better than any LS1, even the ones with true dual that i've heard.

I agree but the LS1's do sound mean with the right exhaust

funny me and a friend were just talking the other day about what makes the different brands sound the way they do..ones firing order. 1998silverbird is my roommate, and i can vouch his car sounds good, a lot better than most V6s ive heard. i can say his car is louder than mine at idle and at low speeds...once we get up in the rpms theyre about the same, mine just is a little deeper. ive got longtube headers, no cats and a cat back with 3and a half inch tailpipes.

Yeah but Blacko1's mustang lopes better then mine due to his Blower cams and his charger wine is louder then both our exausts..

I'm not a fan of the GT exhaust note. Nor am I a fan of the Cobra's. Too high pitched for a V8 to me. Someone said that firing order is one of the things that make the difference in sound. Another thing that makes a difference in the sound is the displacement. I'm sorry, but the old 5.0s sound waaay better (to me) than the 4.6s. Now before you get all upset cause I said it's high pitched, don't think I mean it sounds ricey, or whiney or whatever. It just doesn't growl enough to suit me. Maybe if it were bored out a little and had different camshaft setup, I would change my mind, but as it stands, I rank the GT sound, slightly better than the stock V6 stang sound, and only a couple points up from a fart can. However, when it comes to LS1s, it's almost a spiritual experience. I've never heard an LS1 (modded or stock) that I didn't like. That's just my opinion though, and you know what they say about opinions.
