I just called STS and they said they won't install an aftermarket converter in my car for me. Anyone else in NJ have these problems? Should I just bite it and buy the $225 one Meineke wants to sell me?

they have cats on ebay for like $65. then install it yourself. your'll be fine just clamping it on untill you take it somewhere it get welded, and they wont ( or shouldnt ) want much to do that under $50 probally, but that varies alot place to place.

Where do you live...NJ or Philly?
Before I bought a cat-back system, I went to Midas on Aramingo Av near Castor (in Philly), and they put my new high flow on for $60. The stock converter was beat and inspection was coming up. It was just clamped on because I knew I was going to remove it a few months later to weld on all new pipes myself.

the meineke that put my catback on told me if i wanted them to put a high flow cat on, it had to be direct fit. i bought a universal one anyways, i think im just going to wait till i get some headers, and put it on then.

You'll have to find a different shop that will do it for you. I had a contact at a Midas who installed my !cat for me.

i don't wanna make another thread with same title so ....Thread jack/ Those who live in nj with 2.5" or 3" high flow cat, i got a question for you...1. if i put 2.5" high flow cat am i gonna fail inspection?
            2. If i put header and 3" high flow cat and 3" exhaust am i also gonna fail the inspection?

The reason i ask in two different questions is that because members with diffrent setup (2.5" or 3") can give me idea....

Here in Missouri, there is a law soon to be passed (I hope!) that will allow all cars before 1996 (OBDI) to not have to go through emissions. If it passes, me = long tubes

I'm in south jersey, I just want this damn thing fixed. The car feels pretty bad now, and the cat is rattling around pretty good, so I'm not even driving around because I'm afraid of doing damage to the engine. I think I'm just gona drive it down the street to Meineke and have them do it. My car is due for inspec. in June.

I bought a 3" in, 3" out converter because the exhaust I was buying was a full 3" cat-back. As a temporary fix for my stock system, I bought a 3" to a 2.5" reducer from the muffler shop that cost a whopping $4 and had it clampped on. You can install the reducer permanently if you already have a 3" in/out converter, just ask the muffler shop to weld it on.

If it was warmer outside, I'd do it for you. I'm not going to be doing any automotive work until the temps outside start warming up (I HATE THE COLD!). Right now I have 3 people that need brake jobs, 2 that need minor auto painting, and 2 people that need welding on new SFC's. If you don't get anything done within the next month, contact me by email and I'll let you know if and when I could change the converters for you.

I live in NY and had it done at a Cole Muffler, and although that wont help any, what they did was clamped my 3" inlet to my 3" y-pipe, and then the 3" outlet went to a custom 3" tube with a ball end to accept the 2.25" s-pipe flange. They charged $60 for:
                            1. Installation of the 3" cat
                            2. Creation of custom 3" pipe with ball end
                            3. Installation of magnaflow 2.5" catback

Not a bad deal at all. Im sure meineke can create the same 3" tube with ball/flange setup that my local exhaust shop did.
