• Going Nuts--Idle Air Control Valve--Please Help

Hi,

We're trying to fix a 2000 Firebird 3.8L V-6 MFI that has a rough idle when it heats to normal operating temps. When running cool, it is fine.

We are not throwing any code, and have gotten so much bad info it is making us crazy!!!

A "tech" at AC-Delco sold us an IDLE AIR CONTROL VALUE [IAC #217-427], but then a "tech" at the local dealer said the 2000 3.8L doesn't even use this part.

We sure can't find it anywhere and he said it bolts into the upper intake manifold near front of value cover...ummm...

So who is right, and who is wrong? If anyone has a photo of where this might go, please let us know or post a pic.

We would so much appreciate that.

Thanks!

The valve is located in the throttle body, which is bolted onto the front of the upper intake manifold. There are only a few electrical wires/connectors in this area, look for those.

According to Advance Auto, there is an IAC valve listed for a 2000 Fbody.

99+ don't have IAC valves. The throttle is computer controlled, so the computer just opens the throttle blade to control the idle.

Auto parts stores will sell you whatever the computer tells them. In this case, it's wrong.

Sounds like something is happening in closed loop mode. Check oxygen sensors, EGR, etc.

Hi Matt
Hi Funkz

Thanks for helping. ;) Ummmm... there does seem to be confusion about this issue and it is caused by most of the parts sellers having their computer data wrong!!!

Matt is correct and we appreciate it!!!

We will try to test our egr & 02 instead, and take this part back.

We have a correct graphic that shows application for this IAC...and if we could figure out how to upload...that should remain on site for searchers. We can't be the only ones who have had and will have this problem.

Thanks again!!!
