Try it with a straight pipe and if you don't like it put in a resonator.

It'll sound like **** either way. If you're doing it for power and you don't care about sound, go for it. Otherwise, forget it.

Lol no one in their right mind that wants all their performance keeps their cat... You wont notice a ton off the line, but high rpm you will notice it. It will give you a little more volume, but as far as sounding tough, thats alot more in your muffler and tips than anything. And then its all rpm based. A v6 no matter what you do will not sound like a v8 at high rpm, but you can make it sound pretty tough, and make it sound damn close to a v8 at idle.

Ohh but umm ya don't cut the cat out, its umm illegal, and in now way will I be held liable for actions taken from this... Nor would I ever dream of taking the Emissions control systems out of my street driven vehicles... *ROFL*

i have open y-pipe, its so dam raspy and loud.
                Its obvious is a 6.

the reason 8s sound deeper & better is because they have more displacement. Its too bad we cant bore out our 6s ALOT.

Well I don't know about the 3.8 so much, but the 3.4 is the same block as a 5.0 305 V8 with 2 cylinders cut off, so you can actually bore it quiet a bit.

But ya if you want it to sound anything like an 8 you have to be low rpm, and use resonators smaller pipes, and good quiet tips, only way you can dream of making it even close. And again thats only at around Idle rpm ranges.

Erm I should add onto that, displacement really has little to do with the way an exhaust system sounds. Its all about pressure and size, in which case it does a minimal amount. What really sets a V8 off is the fact that its a V8 8 cylinders, it runs smoother. This is exactly why Ferrari and such companies use 3.0L V12's those are smaller engines then our v6's yet produce 500-700 hp without turbos or supers... And I don't know if you have ever heard one but they sound tough as **** some of them. They only use V10s and V12s because it causes a much better balanced engine. You can have 6 pistons at 2" each or 12 at 1" each. Less torque steer too...

                      awesome, good info
I always heard that bigger pipes would make less rasp, but who knows...
I would like to try out an H pipe, but dont think its worth it

Meh if you don't want to pay for one, just make one, or stroll into a exhaust shop and ask the guys there to weld one up for ya quick, it might slow down the air just enough to tone it down a bit. Exhaust sounds are a funny one, and there is alot to it.

Size matters, amount of air, speed of air, and how exactly it is moving inside of the pipe, alot of factors.

No Cat= Way too much rasp and ricey sound.
Been there, done that. I just bought a magnaflow cat instead and Im happy with it.

Ya a high flow cat isn't a bad idea, out cars actually want a little back preasure anyways, too many people think wide open pipes is the way to go. Problem being our v6's dont have enough torque and we all want more. Same problem with 90% of honda's and such running around they put wide open straight pipes on them and lose everything off the line.

It's alot of calculations I do not know how to do, so mainly its trial and error and trying to match it to the way you want it to sound and the performance you want...

ya, no cat = higher power band (no low end power)
