Trying to get the maf screen out in one piece - pic
Trying to get the maf screen out in one piece - pic
I was gonna try to take out my maf screen today, but it wouldn't come out very easy so I just gave up. I don't wanna break it because I may need to put it back in later. How did you guys get it out without damaging it? I can't get the little ring in front of the screen to come off. Here's a picture:
We were installing my CAI today and we were going to take off the MAF to make it sit really tight in the intake but I decided not to so I can't help you out with what you want to do. We were just going to cut it out with a scalpol. I just wanted to warn you, but you probably already know. I heard that if you do remove it since it's on an angle it actually helps direct air towards where the MAF reads. Since 98+ (i think is the year, might be 99+) and up cars have electronic tbs that are pointed straight they can take off their mafs with no problem. I've actually heard since the maf sensor isn't reading as much air, it is actually hurting performance but I can't back that theory up at all so I might be incorrect. From how it looks, it might be really hard to put the MAF back in if you take it out so make sure you really want it out before you do. If you do decide to take it out please email me at zennx@yahoo.com and tell me if all goes well and if you saw any gains in it. Thanks a lot.

At the bottom, the ring ends have a little hole in them. Get two little finishing nails, or a couple of straightened out paper clips. Stick them in the holes. Hold one steady, and push the other one toward it. This will get the end of the ring out of the groove. Then you can work it out the rest of the way around.
That's the easy part. Getting the screen out is next. I made a couple of L shaped paperclip ends and put them through the holes in the screen and pulled.
I've heard the screen is easier to take out if the intake is warm.
Well I got it out now. I didn't see those small holes on the bottom of the ring. That helped pull the ring off and the screen wasn't too hard once the ring was out. I just used a bent paper clip and made sure to be careful and not break it. I took it out for a drive and it seemed a bit stronger. But if it causes problems later it's going back in.
I took the MAF sensor out and pushed the screen out from inside the TB w/ my finger. Of course that was after removing the retaining ring.

Hey, wait, that's too easy... :D
(it is a good idea!)
I had to put mine back in. MAF readings varied too much, especially when spraying.
I actually lost some MAF flow by removing it on mine by scanning with autotap. On the angled TB its better to leave it in. I also did bad at the track with it out.

95-97 3.8s should leave it in and 98's as well. didn't read any of the thread, just the title. don't take it out, you'll probably lose performance--take my word for it or do a search.
ya I took mine out and it helped alot....easy too....make sure you take the car for a drive first to get it nice and toasty...after I got the ring out the screen literally fell out of place....perfect condition to....
Haven’t done anything on the Camaro, but put LEDs on my truck headlights . And my oil pressure sensor went out on the truck so going to fix that this...
