  • 95-97 intake question

Ok I used search but couldn't find what I was looking for.

I was looking at the stock intake and I've noticed that the big rubber piece that connects to the tb doesn't make a very good seal with that plastic piece. The big metal strap doesn't screw tighter, instead just connects up to those notches. Is there any way to get this tighter because I don't think they make the normal srew tightening straps in that big of a size?

    Anyone else have this problem?

That's hella expensive for an intake. To be honest I'd much rather get headers if I were to spend that much on intake.

I'm not too excited over putting on a cai. Seems like too much trouble for very little hp gain. I acctually wanted to use the stock airbox with the k&n panel filter and fit a pipe where that really tight bend is, because it looks like the biggest restriction.

Think about it this way though. Cause and effect. You're putting on a great exhaust but now your engine is starving for air, especially on the 3.8's with the angled throttle body. Look at your tube that's connected to the stock panel filter and see how constricted it gets to clear the ABS. Yes headers are a great idea but your exhaust will see bigger gains with a CAI. Unfortunately for the 95 & a 1/2- 97 3.8's there's not much choice when it comes to intakes, but at least SLP makes an awesome one for us.

I know this will sound cheap, but $250 for a piece of rubber hose, piece of molded plastic tubing, k&n filter, two metal straps, and maybe a flat piece of plastic to act as a heat shroud? Not exactly a good deal if you ask me. The slp looks better, at least you get two filters with that.

So no one has any ideas on how to make the stock setup more airtight? I mean I think it's sucking in some air from that big rubber piece, it's just not a tight enough fit.

I made my own with 3" mandrel pipe and a cone filter from autozone. Not to hard to do and about $50 total with everything.

I took a look at your intake and it looks pretty good, but it looks like the air filter is too high. I mean won't that suck up hot air? Can you get it any deeper in there and make some kind of heat shroud?

well I have a sheetmetal box being made to go around it to seal it from the engine bay and the heat. Also since it isn't bent down into the hole by the wheel well, there isn't that extra 90* bend to slow the air down. Right now the air filter is resting right above the hole. The picture is an optical illusion, it is actually down as low as it can go without going into the wheel well hole.

just de-baffle your stock air intake... brake off all of the inside flanges.

It's called a Shock Tower Brace. It just keeps the engine bay rigid in hard cornering. Doesn't really do much, but they're not too expensive.
