• Few Questions

I have a few questions about what I should get as far as induction and exhaust. I just got my car this past September (my first car); a 1998 3.8L Camaro so I'm pretty much clueless when it comes to cars. I'm pretty much done with all my appearance mods so I want to start working on some other mods.
I've been told to first look at some mods for the induction. The things I've been looking at are a Whisper Lid, a SLP Ram-Air Induction Package, a Fast Toys Ram Air Kit, a K&N Air Filter, and a K&N Generation II FIPK. I know I dont need both the SLP and Fast Toys kits, but I'm not sure what I should get and in what order. I've read some things about doing ram air mods yourself, but I'm not sure if its worth the trouble and if I'm even capable. I'm just looking for some input.
As far as exhaust I don't really have a clue either. I've seen a few different exhaust systems for V6 Camaros, but I don't know which I should get. I really don't have much money so the cheaper the better, but I still want it to be decent. Right now I just have a stock exhaust system. The two I've looked at are the Borla and Magnaflow Performance exhaust systems ( http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog...&vid=5&pcid=53 ). I'm not sure if these are good or not. Again, I just want some advise from people that know what they're doing.

Thanks,
Dan

ok, first the induction. when it comes to the different options of induction, they all will give you the same amount of gain either way. so, what you really need to decide is what kind you want to see under your hood. i prefer the k&n, whipser lid, and Austin Super Sucker ram air approach because i like the way it looks over a cold air intake. also, dont forget that you have an angled throttle body and you need to buy what fit the 98' year.

when it comes the the exhaust, what you need to do first is listen to the exhaust clips posted to in this section and decide from there what you want. borla is a really good system but everything they sell is over priced. magnaflow is also a good brand. spend some time reading and searching cause there are a lot of options and ways of going about doing things available.

So say I get the Whisper Lid and Fast Toys Ram Air Kit, do I still need the K&N Generation II FIPK? What about just an K&N air filter? If I get the K&N FIPK would I still need a K&N air filter?

Thanks for the help.

no, if you want, no.

see, with a whisper lid, and the ram air kit, you are upgrading the lid you already have by having a larger filter housing area, its smooth inside which gets rid of the fins inside the stocker and the silencer box hanging off the tubing from the stock lid to the throttle body and adding on the raim air section. now if you want the FIPK ( cold air intake), then you are bypassing the lid section all together because that tube comes right off the throttle body, comes down and to the side behind the radiator down to the side. also, to answer one of your other questions, that FIPK comes with the cone K&N filter, so once again, no, you wouldnt need to buy a filter also. but, if you get the lid, you will need the K&N filter, if you want, if either of the whisper lid or raim air kit does not come with it. and about just a K&N filter, you will get better air flow but not nearly the amount of doing either or of what your talking about.

Alright, thanks for the help. Just to summarize it, do you recommend buying the Whisper Lid, the Ram Air kit, and a regular K&N air filter?

Welcome to the board Dan! as far as exhaust goes, my personal favorites are: SLP Loudmouth, Rumbler, and Borla. Rambler is definately the best bang for the buck exhaust. So yeah look into these exhaust, if you like loud and good sounding exhausts. Anyways, good luck.

P.S. How old are you? (just curious because my camaro is my first car as well and im 16) and any pictures of the Camaro?

In My Opinion.. Flowmaster<Magnaflow<LoudMouth<Rambler&lt ;Borla

headers, intake, cutout,hi flow cat together help the tone and overall sound of your exhaust.

I find that the flowmaster exhausts (in the clips) had a lower rumble to them. It's all a matter of choice, when I got my first car it was straight pipes or nothing for me. Then again I had a Olds 355 rocket in a Cutlass.

Your other option for the intake is to modify your stock lid (look here to see what i mean http://www.camarov6.com/ubb/ultimate...;f=29;t=000012 ) and then you can get rid of the bellows with a 3" PVC cupling or some other pipe to put in the place of the bellows. You can also look into a cutout instead of a full exhaust if you just want performance at the track and have a quiet ride on the road. As for the exhaust listed the rumbler is by far the best bang for the buck and will offer the best performance of all of them, however it is F-ing loud, the magnaflow is the mellow one out of the bunch. My exhuast (listed in my sig) is really mellow till i open the cutout and then its just downright obnoxious.

I'm 17...just turned 17 in Feb. I have some pictures, but I'm in the middle of doing the clear corners and some tints so I'll take some pictures and post them after that.

Thanks again everyone for the help. Now I have a good idea of what I'm going to do.
