I just bypassed my air silencer yesterday, i used a 3", by 4.25" long pvc pipe. (which i painted black) Its probaly one of the better mods i've done and definatley the cheapist. The motor has a real nice hum and a little more high end push. Also i had a custom cat-back exhaust made i had to use 2.5" pipe from the cat all the way to just over the rear axle (the exhaust guy couldnt bend the 3" pipe enough to fit it over the axle) so it goes to 3" piping right over the axle. i reused my flowmaster 80 series since it was already burnt in, and i went with 3" outlet pipes to 3.5 inch chrome tips. I know everyone here has there own opinions on the better exhaust set up, and im sure many different set ups sound good in thier own right but WOW it made the exhaust sound deep and loud and it only really sounds raspy when you rev in park or neutral. In short

I think only 98+ has air silencers. Its the big tub looking thing right after your airbox. the airbox has a rubber hose attaching to it and the throttle body has a hose attaching to it. basically you loosen all the clamps, pull the hose off the air lid then off the silencer.(make sure you unplug the wire leading to the sensor) pull out the plastic plug pins on both sides of the silencer. then slide the silencer off the throttle body hose, pull the silencer out (as you will see its a big waste of space) then pull the hose off the end of the throttle body where the infamous MAF screen is. take the two hoses and clamp them around the end of the pvc pipe (you will have to buy new hose clamps)then attach the hose back to the throttle body. finally put the air lid back on and make sure everything is sealed tightly. thats about it.
