  • Banging/vibration from cat area???

My neighbor just re-welded my cat and it isnt leaking anymore. I took it for a ride and immediately noticed it was quieter til i hit the gas to go down the street. All i heard was a loud vibration and sort of like a banging under the car. I can hear it coming from where the cat is. So i drove it back and told him and he bent the heat shield (he didnt jack it up) and said ok thats giving it more clearance. But then i drove it home and well, its still pretty loud (not the entire way but when i hit a certain rpm i think). I am going to have a look myself tomorrow... I think something got repositioned somehow and is rubbing or whatever.

obviously it isnt the heat shield. I dont think a heat shield would vibrate that much (where i can feel it in the car). Does anyone know what I am talking about?

put on a glove and feel the cat while the engine is being revved. It you don't hear it, it's the heat shield (because you'll be holding it still). If you do you'll prolly feel the stuff bouncing around inside.

Ok I will try this... but the vibration and soun d is pretty intense so I would think it was something a little more serious than a heatshield you know? Later today after i cut the grass me and my dad will have a go at it. Thanks.

Be careful when you do and make sure the glove is very heat resistant. The cat gets VERY VERY HOT especially where there is no heat shield.

I had the same problem, and it turned out that it was the heat shield. I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. But I finally found it.

You know what guys? I had turned it on and revved it *to about 3k* and didnt really feel or hear anything... so then i took a look at it. Now my neighbor had adjusted the entire system up a little more to give me more clearance and well, it looks like its just touching the heat shield where you cant get to from the passenger side. So, if I and my dad can get it lifted up a little and have a look from the drivers side, we should be able to maybe bend it a little or something. It was raining on and off so i guess i have to wait.

It sort of scared me because its pretty loud and I was thinking no way is it the heat shield. lol

My SES flashes on/off really fast once when i turn the key to the on position... does this still mean its throwing some kind of code?

No i think it just does that, don't all of your warning lights do that when you first start the car?

Well it flashes really quickly and the last light that goes out is the security one I think. I am going to take it for a little drive and then maybe later get it up on a ramp or tomorrow morning.

I drove it again tonight and well, when I hit bumps it hits my car *loudly* and its really concerning me. I believe the over axle is now hitting worse when they raised it all up. I have heard that noise before but is it possible its coming from the front near the cat as well as the over axle? I guess i gotta get under there tomorrow when my friend and i come back from shopping in the morning. ugh. This is starting to piss me off... and the reason i havent taken it to a shop is cause the last time i did i paid 100 bucks for them to just stick a bolt through a rubber hanger to sort of pull the over axle pipe up... it was a rip off really.

I see exactly where its hitting... basically i cant even shove my finger in between the s pipe/car (there is a hump where u can outline where the passenger seat is) and its very close to that (its right where that removable plate goes right under the s pipe)... i guess he will have to take it off and do something to it (i dont know how unless he dents the car or the pipe). doh. for the week i have to live with the noise but the ride to work is 3.5 miles one way.

I was about to say, if you had someone ride in your car ask them if it felt like it was rattling right underneath them. Thats where mine was rattling till we fabbed a hanger in at the shop.
