New cat

In the last two days I've heard a rattle after the car heats up that sounds like it's coming from under the car. I especially hear it when I'm along side another car and give a little rev. From what I've found on this board, it sounds like I may need a new cat. This one does have over 70,000 miles on it. I got under the car last night, and nothing seemed to loose (like a heat shield or something).
I've seen a lot of members suggest a Catco cat as a replacement, and they've given various opart numbers. I checked prices on Summit, but I'm not exactly sure which model I need. I wanted to get the closest thing to the OEM size, but I don't know what that is. Can anyone help?

the universal catco which will work prefectly is very short compared to the stock

the stock replacement size from catco is like 120 bucks or so compared to the 50 for the universal cat

I'm fairly certain this has been asked before but.. if you replaced your cat with a straight pipe would the ses light still come on?

Edit: What I mean by this is to cut the cat off and weld a 2.25" pipe exactly where the cat was. Leaving the 02 censors where they are. Would this still result in a ses light or would it be ok?

The SES light would come on. You have an O2 sensor after the cat that basically monitors how the cat's working. If you replace it, that sensor will throw a code.

(On a personal note, I don't endorse removing the cat. Just put on a high-flow if you want to.)

You might want to get it on a lift and double-check that. It can be hard to see if the heat shield's loose. It will only barely be lifted up when you're looking at it from under the car. Mine's loose for the second time now, but it's dirt-cheap to fix.

If it was a bad Cat and not a loose heat shield, would it trigger an SES light? Haven't gotten that...yet.
