  • Annoying noise

Theres been this really annoying noise ive been hearing lately... its hard to pinpoint... It only comes then the car's in drive at about 2000 rpm's. It sounds like a vibration noise... metal lightly vibrating on metal... I have no idea what it is. I recently got a BMR Stb... could this be it? Anything else??

PS- I have not removed any of those vibration dampeners.

    PPS- Maybe a clogged CAT?

It is probably your cat. If so, it will gradually get worse. That's what happened with mine. After the car is warmed up, you may be able to cause the noise by powerbraking to 2K rev's.

i am having this problem too. been too lazy to get it in the air to shake all the exhaust parts and heat shields. sounds like a heat shield on mine.

do you have the SLP CAI? is it coming from the left front part of the car? i know that mine squeaks a lot because of the metal on metal. that could be it.

I have no SLP CAI yet, though it should be coming soon.... It gotta be something to do with the exaust... ill take a look. Today it didnt make the noise at all. Hope its not the cat. How else can you tell if its the cat?

hit it and see if it rattles.
you may also do a snap-throttle vacuum test to check for clogged cats, but if all you have is a rattle just smack it with your hand and see if it rattles. make sure its not hot if you plan to hit it with your bare hands. of course you probably were aware of this.

That, of course, is why you use simple tools to perform this function... like your friend's hand. :D

to rule out heat shield vibrations as the cause, remove them and go drive under the conditions that usually cause the rattle. do not drive for a long time and do not let it get all the way up to operating temp. if your cat happens to be clogged the overheated cat could easily melt/ignite the carpeting inside the car if the heat shields are not in place. i will be doing this myself this evening to track this d@mn rattle that's driving me crazy... (a few days ago the rumble of the flowmaster covered the sound of the rattle but now i've taken away the distraction of the loud muffler and the rattle annoys me worse than the muffler did.)

                          d'ah... i hate chasing noises.

Tale a rubber mallet and bang on the Y-Pipe and you will hear the same annoying sound....
