3inch is not overkill
but if your only plan is intake exhaust, then i would stick with 2.5, since a little backpressure can be a good thing.
but if your plan is to open the car up (heads cam gears full exhaust and the such) then definatley 3 inch
and Regal, i dunno if your car is mighty compared to ours, but is far from bieng weak
I will take on all comers...or come on all takers!!! Whichever you prefer.
and after re-reading this thread again,
if minimul bolt ons is all you have and you throw on a 3 inch piping, you will get the horsepower but will sacrifice trq in the process.
in this aspect i wouldnt sacrifice trq for horsepower.
if you want horsepower find other ways of doing it, then making your exhaust as loud as humanly possible
I will take on all comers...or come on all takers!!! Whichever you prefer.
u guys are a bunch of noobs....u do NOT LOSE torque when u move up to 3in over 2 1/2, it simply moves the torque band up, so therefore you have more top end, while it does feel like you have lost torque down low, U HAVNT LOST ANY TORQUE, in fact you probably gained some up high, oh and 01BlkRegal you need to losen up a bit, stop insulting people and being a pessimist, so go have fun on a BUICK REGAL forum, because your input here has not been informative at all. and guys...god, BACKPRESSURE IS NOT A GOOD THING!!! thats such a myth...sure a little will help down low, but all it does is hurt high end, thats why the majority of fast cars on this site run 3in exhaust compared to 2 1/2 in.
ok so lemme get this straight?
im going to believe you when clearly your contradicting yourself about backpressure not bieng a good thing, and about back pressure bieng a myth, then flip flop <ala john kerry> and say it will help down low.
and yes i agree, all the fast cars are running 3 inch pipe. but then again they have a heck of alot more mods then say.....a flowmaster catback and a whisper lid. so thank you for helping me prove my point.
and as for the regal dude, leave him be, hes only trying to prove a point while others wanna get into a pissing contest much like yourself. so, why not try to take some "good advice" and loosen up a bit.
anyways this isnt meant to be turned into a flame war of a thread, im giving my thoughts on it based on my experiance. <worked in a exhuast shop for about a year and a half>
ok im done, and btw Chadder is spelled Input-contribution of information or a comment or viewpoint: a discussion with input from all members of the group.
i will no longer respond to this thread, hope any of this chatter will help at all

okeydoke, ill admit you kinda got me on that one...but what i said was not a contradiction, its like the difference between an LS1 and a LT1, the LT1's powerband is lower than the LS1 so it 'feels' like the LT1 has more torque but in fact we all know that stock for stock, the LS1 has more, just higher in the powerband, THAT is really what i meant. Im not trying to get into a pissing contest, i just dont like it when people insult others for no apparent reason, but now that we are really off topic, this thread is pretty much useless....btw, i know how you spell INPUT, i was typing quickly and made a typo, so dont be an english nazi (lol jk)

Hahaha, i hear you, and yes i lied im responding. well ok, as long as thier isnt no more controversy on the whole which diameter pipe will be better. i dont want this thing to be an all out flame war like some other post not too long ago....and im sorry, no more german english thing anymore, lol

you WILL gain more Peak HP with a 3 inch system. But all that does is inflate your ego on a dyno. A lesser diamiter, free flowing system will net you more AVERAGE hp which is what moves you down the track faster. The buick guy got it pretty right. You will lose TQ. Wether you get to use any of it higher in the power band depends on a great many things.
Damnit Shaun, I thought I taught you better :( Don't follow the lemmings.
I have a friend with a 01 V6 that we have running mid 14's with very, very ,very few mods. A 3 inch exhaust will never ever ever touch his car. I would be worried going much over 2.5. 2.75 backed up with headers, better Y pipe and a high flow cat will net you a very very nice average HP gain.
Say what you want but just a lid and 3" catback (loudmouth ) took about a half a second off my e/t and I pulled a slower 60ft time.

Your MPH shows the HP gain, just find the sweet spot again and work on your launches, your car is easily a 15.0 car. Hell look at my time, my 86mph shows the 150rwhp/175rwtq I'm putting to the wheels.

"Many V6 drivers upgrade to 2.5" systems all the way through - this will provide a solid power gain and a mean sound. Many more go with the 3" all the way, and there is a common myth that you lose torque with this one. NOT TRUE! The reason a lot of people with 3" exhaust think that they have lost torque is because the engine is more efficient--it is producing the power more smoothly, resulting in less of a noticeable kick when they stomp on the gas. The power is still there, even if it feels like it is not. Little things like this prove the point that the only way to accurately determine the gains from a modification are strict before and after dyno tests. The feel of your engine can be deceiving."
Ok, I'm gonna try to put an end to this. Next week sometimes I'll have my car dyno'd (All stock). Then I'll throw on a 3" loudmouth and dyno again. Then maybe we'll see an end to all these posts? I myself can see both POV's, so I'm curious to see what the results will be. Just give me till the end of this month.

You still wont convince everyone. You'd have to dyno stock exhaust, switch to 2.5", dyno, throw on a 3", then dyno again. Then you are going to have people claim that the particular systems you chose were inferior to this or that setup, so your numbers are off anyway. In the end, the only person that you have to convince is yourself.
