  • Whats my exhaust size?... Also I have another question...

I have a 97 Camaro RS with the Y87 Package so I think the only difference in the exhaust is dual turn downs... I THINK because it's from SLP. But for information purposes, what size inlet/outlet exhaust do I have and does it really net me 5 extra ponies? My car DOES feel a tad bit more responsive than my dads 98 V6...

Here's the other question...I like the sound and tone of my RS exhaust perfectly but I still...want more power... My question is if I had an exhaust shop gave me 3 inch outlets from the muffler and got 3 inch tips that show instead of those hidden turndowns... would I gain any power and keep my sound?

you exhaust size is 2.25"......as for getting more ponnies, i dont think you going to get really much cuase your still going to be restricting the exhaust flow with the stocker. if you like your sound, get a cutout.

also your dad's '98 has 3.23 gears in the back if its a 5-speed, 3.08 if its an auto. With the Y87 package on your 97, if its a 5-speed you still only have 3.23's but if its an auto, its got 3.42's so that would also make your car feel more peppy.

Any larger exhausts that will give me the same or close to the same sound but more power? What determines sound anyway? I always thought it was the muffler and the exhaust pipes had nothing to do with it...

Sound is determined basically by mufflers, cats and pipe size. Bigger pipe size = louder. No cats = louder. No mufflers = louder. And of course vice versa.

just because he yas a auto or a stick, doesnt dictate what gears he has. many autos came with 3.23s, and even some non y87's came with the 3.42s. im not sure about the stick guys, but i think that they can also have 3.08. also, y87 is only a auto, it came with LSD and 3.42 rear.

              Holy crap.

              Autos: 3.08s (standard) or 3.42s with Y87. No 3.23s.
              Manuals: Only 3.23s.
Y87 is available on M5s, it just doesn't include the 3.42 gears.
