  • Throttle body build up

I was putting my MAF screen back on the other day and I was runing my finger on the inside of the TB and noticed a black substance on my finger. Is this fuel making its way back to the air, or any thoughts?

I could be wrong but I have heard that some of your exhaust gets put back into the throttle body via the ECV pipe.

That's the EGR valve, and it does recirculate some exhaust gas back into the manifold. If dirt is showing up all the way into the throttle body, it must be backing up somehow, or perhaps the car has been run with bad air filters, or no filter at all at times.

Umm every throttle body is going to get dirty inside, they aren't going to stay perfectly clean. It's not backed up or nothing lol. If it was backed up your engine wouldn't run. They make throttlebody/carbuerator cleaner just for these types of situations. Just leave your car running get someone to give it some gas and shoot some of this stuff through your car and enjoy.

I said maybe. I don't know what you run in your car. I hope you run an air filter. Most people do. I was just musing. Ted is right that every throttle body will get a little dirty, but if it's really grimy, something is wrong.

I didn't mean "backed up" in the same sense as a toilet or something. I meant that evidently, if carbon was in the throttle, it had to come from further down in the engine somewhere. Doesn't matter what you call it. Black carbon doesn't just grow on throttle bodies.

I believe almost EVERY throttle body gets like that. It's like that on my Jeep, my Fiancee's RAV-4 and my old cars. WHILE THE CAR IS RUNNING, spray it with some TB cleaner. It will smoke like a train, but it cleans it up nice for a while. My mechanic charges $20 to do this, but I do it myself.

Take your intake off exposing the MAF screen, you can take the MAF screen off or at least I would, it is held on by a snap ring (MAKE SURE YOU DONT CUT IT OUT, I BELEIVE THEY COST MONEY) just take a screw driver lightly pop the ring out and the MAF screen should come right out. So now your TB should be completley exposed. Turn the car on and give it gas (this is to flip the throttle so you can clean down past your TB) it will smoke just let it run for a while. Mine was built up really bad cuz i have an older 96. It probably wasn't cleaned out before. It seems to stay pretty clean now.
