  • Ram Air from the grille?

i've been trying to figure out a way to make this work....using the grille for ram air, instead of getting a ram air hood. there's a few problems:

    1. VERY small space to work with.
    2. Bumper and reinforcements make grille openings hard to get to.
    3. Hood clearance.
    4. Hood latch.

my idea was to have a tube or something running from each opening in the grille, up to the front of the airbox, providing it with fresh air. i think it could work, but i need flexible tubing of some sort. if i wanted to go real hardcore with the idea, i could have a friend of mine fabricate an aluminum piece for me that would be able to slide into position. any suggestions?

this has been asked before. I believe the consensus was that the routing of the ducts would be so convoluted that they wouldnt be efficient enough to provide the 'ram air' effect.

ehh dirt can be removed, not concerned about that. i'm convinced there's a way to make this work. i just need some time to work on it. it would make for a nice little surprise when popping the hood.

i looked at the pics on his site, but his setup looks like a regular cold-air package.

what i'm attempting to do is have two (or maybe two into one) ducts running from the grille to the opening beneath the airbox. if you look at the stock airbox, there's a slight opening underneath. i would raise the airbox up, giving me enough room to get the outlet of the ducts into the airbox. Voila, ram air. i think it can be done, and i'm gonna figure out a way to do it.

                        hey skorpion317,

lemme know if you get your setup to work. I've traded my '99 Bird for an '02, & lost the CAI (so called ram-air kit)& exhaust I put on it. Sooooo, I was thinkin' I can make my own air scoop in the same way. After all, it is just a rust proof box that fits in front of the condensor coil, and scoops air from under the nose, and into the bottom of the air box. As for the exhaust I lost, well, Flowmaster American Thunder just didn't have the thunder.

                        Anyway, lemme know....

it'll be a little different for me, i've got a Camaro. For Firebirds, you can port the "nostrils" in the front of the car. there's an article about it somewhere on this site. Camaros have a different grille.
