I was demonstrating to a friend earlier today what engine breaking was and for the first time ever my exhaust backfired LOUD and I mean loud. Downshift...whaaaaaaaaaPOW. I thought it sounded cool but WTF caused it to do that?
After you let off the gas completely, the pcm will cut off the fuel from the injectors. (if you are going above a certain speed that is... if you are idling it will still fuel, otherwise it would die...)
There is about a 2 second delay though before it cuts the fuel.
And a car will tend to run rich on deceleration anyway.
So you probably loaded some fuel into the exhaust during the first part of that delay, and the exhaust system was hot enough to ignite it.
If you let off earlier, and wait a bit before downshifting (2 seconds or more), it probably won't ever do it again.
(I had an old '72 Buick Skylark that split a muffler open when it backfired one time, when the choke was sticking shut on it. That was really LOUD!)
lol I don't mind that it did it, I thought it sounded cool.
Basically I was crusing at around 35-40 and I let off the gas, and shifted into 2nd...it's an auto. So ya know it downshifted and then about 2 sec later as it's revving down it went POW. I thought it was cool
yeh, with my cut-out It can be heard very cleanly - what he described about the fuel cut off. what I do is in 1st keep the throttle down a bit to get it up to about 3500-4200 or so Rpm, Higher can still do it but I dont reve it high unless Im racing. And what I do is let ALL THE WAY fast off the gas, and then get back into it right then @ the same point I was when I let it off. - vrrrrrrrrr ( off- on ) WHABAM-bam- VRRRRR- Sounds like beef the way mine is setup. But I never heard it untill I droped out the muffler.
Mine did that with the cutout open one time at WOT getting on the highway. Whaaaaaa, POP! POP! Backfired really loud. I was like "wtf?" and I bet I scared the sh** out of some homeless guy on the side of the road!

Haven’t done anything on the Camaro, but put LEDs on my truck headlights . And my oil pressure sensor went out on the truck so going to fix that this...
