Hey,
You guys have probably heard this question before but I would appreciate the help. I have decided to get a flomaster 80 series muffler for my 95 firebird (3.4) I went to summitracing.com and they list two model numbers for the 80 series. The 42583 muffler has one 2.5 inch inlet and two 2.5 outlets. The 43083 has one 3 inch inlet and two 2.5 outlets. I have been told the stock pipe leading to the muffler from the cat is 2.25 inchs. So should i go with the 42583 and use an adaptor. Also how long does it take to break in the muffler and make it sound its best, are there are tricks to doing this. THANKS

P.S. The reason why I am getting this muffler is because I have heard great reviews and the only complaint is the ricey sound above 3000 RPM. This is something I am not worried about because I very rarely travel at high speeds or redline the car. So this would seem like the perfect muffler for my low RPM driving, any thoughts?

Get your intake done. That'll deepen the sound or your exhaust will sound like a honda. Check with SLP

I got 2.5 from the convertor. I'd go with the 2.5 inlets. Don't worry, over time it doesn't sound as bad. It sounds high at 4.5-5k rpm. If you change your stock filter and get a K&N, it sounds a little different... plus you can kinda hear the sucking sound as wind goes in... I like this also.

Since you have to adapt it anyway, why does it matter which one you get? However, I would think that if you were ever planning on going with 3 inch pipe to the muffler you might want the 43083.

I'll have to get back to you on the part number, cause I don't remember which one it is....

As for the tips, I have one 3 inch tip on each side. I can't just give you the technical name for them, cause I don't know. Got them at the shop when I got the muffler put on. They are chrome plated (wish they were stainless), rolled, and slash cut... but the angle is not very steep. The walls on the tip are about 1/4 inch thick. They are also about 18 inches long and go straight back (I mean they are the same diameter the whole way). I think the tips have a large effect on the sound, so try to choose one not just on looks. I've seen many tips that are kind of like mine (especially on trucks), however, they are very thin, and the slash is more pronounced. My friend has some like these on his Firebird. I like mine better. I also think mine make the sound deeper and more resonant due to the thicker construction.
