  • Help Replacing my CAT

For the past few months I have known my CAT was gone just do to the horrible sound that it creates.. so today I decided to take it to a local muffler shop (Midas) to get quote on replacing it.. The guy at the shop said that the CAT alone was $485 (Canadian) because the stock CAT is not universal and I need a special one also said I need to replace all 4 o2 sensors at $122.00 per Sensor, anyways of course didnt do it.. Is there really something special about the stock cat that makes it cost so much to replace also do I need to replace the sensors.. the guy at midas said they need to be changed every 80,000 kilometers..Any suggestions about what I can do to replace my CAT the price almost made me fall over..

    Add: I have a 97 Camaro 3.8l

Just get a magnaflow cat off Ebay. It's onely about $50 US. Just get the 3"cat and a 3"-3'coupling and a 3"-2.5"coupling and about 5"of 2.5"pipe and another 2.5"-2.5"coupling and clamps to hook it all up.
A sawsall makes short work of cuting the old one out.
Some places require that it's welded for inspection, so before inspection ask someone .If you have to just have a shop weld all the couplings in place.also very cheap.

They are gonna take you for a ride. First of all don't go to midas. Second of all, go a to a smaller mom and pop type place.

There is nothing specail about the stock cat, other than the fact it is expencive.
