  • upgrade to free whisper lid

As i was reading this month's "Camaro Performers" magazine (division of "Chevy High Performance" mag), i came across an article comparing the several Whisper-type lids for the LS1. They did a dyno test, a track test, and a fit and finish test as well. highest scoring was the SLP lid, which gave the most power and lowest 1/4 time. the Whisper lid did pretty well, also.

anyway, back to the topic, the article talked about the first-ever lid created for the LS1, made by MTI. they found that it wasn't the fins in the airbox that robbed the most power, but the transition from the oval airbox outlet to the round tubing and MAF. the oval-to-round transition was screwing up airflow by causing turbulence. so MTI made their outlet round, along with smoothing the interior of the box, and picked up 17 horses on the LS1. so, my idea is to hack off the oval outlet on our airbox, and replace it with round PVC or some other plastic-type thing. i posted in general tech about attaching the PVC to the airbox, so any help is appreciated there. i'll let everyone know how it goes once i git-er-done.

I read the same thing... olny thing is not sure how to get it to work.

I looked at some dyrere ducting roof mounts but nothing looked ot work.

You have an idea toss it up, I have a spare lid that I have modded, and I am willing to try something feasible with it.

to make it work, the airbox hole has to be enlarged on the top and bottom. a dremel would come in handy there. the sides of the hole would have to be filled in, or the PVC (or whatever we used) would have to have to be big enough to cover it up. i'll measure the opening later...then there would be the problem of getting the PVC joined to the airbox. i'm thinking a soldering gun would be able to heat the pplastic so it melts together, but something more (or less) powerful might be needed.

on a side note, MustangEater, did you see the 1st gen on the cover of the magazine? that was one of the sweetest-looking cars ever.

The original lid just isn't tall enough to fit a round PVC pipe. Most whisper lids are taller and I have been trying to tell people that its the oval that creates flow disruption and not the fins. People keep breaking off the fins thinking that they now have a free whisper lid when the oval part is 95% of the problem.

it could be if the bottom edge is filed down. like that little lip near the bottom of the airbox.

i measured the outlet on the stock box, it's 6" across. i'd say the biggest PVC to go with would be 4", that's the diameter of the HVAC ducting i have in place of the air silencer. the hole left by the oval outlet would need to be filled in.
