• Free Ram-Air???

sup everyone I'm new to the board, and the very proud owner of one of the last v6 firebird's to come off the line. here's my quick question: I've heard a lot of people talk about/seen in their signatures, a free ram air upgrade. how do i raise my airbox?? can i do it in the saftey and security of my own home? what tools do i need, and how long is this going to take?? I can't get any other mods at this point, because my mom needs the car every once in a while, and hates the "loud exhaust noise." my only mod right now will be put on shortly...it's that new sony head unit that you can download images to. so I'm looking for a cheap mod that'll let me sneak in a few extra hp. one more thing, on some of the websites I've been to, when advertising a ram-air kit, they usually say something like, "may cause a slight supercharging effect at higher speeds." are they just pulling my leg or is this true? can i get the same result with the free ram-air mod? sorry about writing this whole essay, but I am really looking forward to any advice you gurus can give me. thanks a lot in advance. Peace.

Welcome to the board - I think the free air mod you're refering too is cutting the bottom of the air-box to allow more air in from below.

The Ram-Air kit is basically the same thing, except air is routed through a scoop thats pointed down towards the road.

Tools for doing these are minimal, like a ratchet set, screw driver, and a dremmel tool. There are many pros & cons to doing either that have been discussed hear alot.

Yeah, all ya need is a socket to fit the bolts on the airbox, and a jigsaw.

It's kinda hard to explain exactly what to cut though... You basically cutout two small rectangle pieces from the bottom of the airbox, and then cut part of this small piece of plastic below it.

Check out that article, it has pictures and in-depth instructions.

If you screw up, it makes for a good excuse to buy a Whisper lid or FIPK
