  • Old model .vs. New model catco.

    Well today i have been shopping for a new cat. Just talked to some guy over the phone (http://www.discountconverter.com/) and he said that there wasn't a magnaflow cat available that would fit. (96 3.8) This guy then told me that he did have a CATCO that would. I told him that i wanted to stay away from catco because of all the trouble our board members have been having with SES and the CATCO. He then told me that this was not a problem anymore because the "new" catco converters were designed for OBD2 and would not set SES codes at all.

    What gives? Is he just blowing smoke? Are the converters everyone is having problems with different from this "new obd2" converter?

    Even if this guy is right i prob. won't buy one from him anyway. $70 seems a bit high for a catco.

    buy a carsound one off ebay, for like $35, no SES, and its been 20k kms

      Sure. But what i was asking has anyone heard anything regarding this "new" catco?

        That's news to me. And considering that there ARE magnaflow cats that fit on 96 3.8's, this guy either 1) doesn't know what he's talking about, or 2) lying to you to try to move the merchandise that he's got stacked up. Either way, I'd shop elsewhere.

        [edit] You'll probably want part #94009 if you go with magnaflow.

            well my mom got a catco installed in her 2000 camaro.

            its totally stock.. we just replaced the cat cause the stock one went bad.

            well.. its been about a month, and she hasnt gotten a code yet.

            so i guess they did make them safe for OBDII cars.

              ive never really got a probem but now i am geting a ses light i wonder what it is and my gas milage has been going down i wonder if its cuz the cat?

                if you have a quality cat (whatever the brand) and it "goes out","melts down" or any other sort of "malfunction" then you have a problem elsewhere. Like a bad o2 sensor or something is causing your car to run rich. Cat's are designed to last well over 100k miles on a car that is properly maintained. If your cat "dies" and you just swap the cat you have not solved the problem. You are just going to melt another one.

                I will state again however this holds true so long as there are no defects with the cat to begin with.

                  My $60 catco from summit is working fine. I have not had any SES lights.

                    I agree with you about the rich condition shortening the life of the cat. That may be (like you said) why so many members are having problems with the new catcos. I have been having some issues with my #3 o2 sensor right before my cat started to go.

                    Based on this and all of the helpful replies i think that i will just be picking up the magnflow and replacing the #3 sensor for good measure.

                    I definately will not be buying from the guy that was trying to move catco's on me. Thanks for the comments everyone.
