  • Measuring EGT with air temp gauge?

Why can't this be done? Specifically, using a standrad air temperature gauge to measure exhaust gas temperature. What does an EGT sending unit do that an air temp doesn't?

I would think tha a EGT sensor would be made to withstand the high temperatures of exhaust gas, whereas air temp guage probably doesn't measure beyond like 125 degrees. Seems logical
