there is little v6 tuning for the 3.4L adn what there is, is expensive. thers not much you can do. the 3 inch exhaust will equal lower rph HP and TORQUE Peaks. which would mean u would get a faster acceleration at lower rmps which means shift poitns would change. its not dumb to go that way but if u had a n/a motor thats one of the best ways to go for your exhaust setup even on our lil 3.4;s i left hte 2.5inch straight pipe to flowmaster on mine, and felt he gains. would ahve been better gains if i went to a 3 inch, and i regret i didnt, my intake an dexhaust setup was the only reason i won races. its amaing what u can get a 3.4 to do with it just to breath right, get a free flowing itnake or make your own, and get a free flowing exhaust = MORE HP. ur peak wil move to a dif RPM but its still there. So stop Flaming and start LEARNING.

I didn't say it did not gain performance from 3"
exhaust.
I'm telling you, dropping the pipe diameter to 2.5"
WILL get you more power.
It's the difference from getting 8 HP, or 12 HP.
If the proper flow rate catalytic was installed,
the pipe diameter wouldn't need to be 3 inches.
IE: Stick in a 600+ CFM, 2.5" catalytic converter
instead of a 400 CFM, 3.0" cat.
P.S. Add a third to that world's list of 3.8L
tuners.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to weld different
size pipes to an exhaust system.
You are forgetting, I do own a 1996 3.8L Camaro.
I can even take pictures of the custom work done
to the cat. for more power keeping the same pipe
diameter.Welcome to the Internet where everyone\'s a mechanic and has a 10 second car.<br /> <a href=\"http://www.gmthunder.com\" target=\"_blank\">http://www.gmthunder.com</a> <br /> <a href=\"http://www.rudyhelds.com/Customer_Rides/80_Camaro_Z28.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http://www.rudyhelds.com/Customer_Rides/80_Camaro_Z28.htm</a> <br />When the green flag drops, all the bull**** stops.

or just cut the cat, u dont need it. but then agian u from canida. dont know the emmisions there. but u can cut it, and get an added 4-10hp from that. and its not much louder. it is loud and it sounds good without it. depending on oyur intake setup as stated before. u will feel more or less gain. but it will be there. just at dif rpm. sure you can go for a high flow cat. but theres nothing better then straight headers. free flowing is the best way to go. with lower hp u want some backpressure. therefore i ran it to a Muffler other wise i would have kept straight pipe all the way through. its just really loud, that way. install a resonater int he place of your cat. or just put in a pipe. and tell mme u didnt get more gain from that on the dyno then it being a cat. put on a cold air kit. and make it breath right via p&p intake. or at least the throttle body and see what gains you get. then swithc the pipe to a cat, and watch the decrease.<a href=\"http://www.geocities.com/hemigtx001\" target=\"_blank\">http://www.geocities.com/hemigtx001</a> <br /> <a href=\"http://www.geocities.com/hemigtx001/Firebird_Index.html\" target=\"_blank\">http://www.geocities.com/hemigtx001/Firebird_Index.html</a> <br />1993 3.4L firebird<br />mods-flowmaster 80 series, removed cat. "3 is too big. you run into a problem with trying to fill more exhaust volme then your motor can push out." - HBHRacing
I don't see anywhere in there where you say: "you need a properly tuned system" -- and whos to say he's not going with a blower or nitrous? Whos to say he's just bolting on a catback in which case a 3" works great as JUST a catback. The ONLY problem where people are running in to problems with a PURE 3" exhaust system is when they have absolutely NO other mods and go with headers, 3" in/out cat, and 3" catback system with absolutely NOTHING to smooth out the exhaust flow. If you had any idea of how much time I've put in to MY engine engine setup you'd know of the setup I'm going to be doing goes from 2 1/2" to 3" for a nice smooth flow to assist with keeping SOME power down low for the take off but giving it the ability to gain more in the top end where MY car is its weakest.
And you guys have NO idea whats going on my car. So who are you to tell me that MY car is going to perform best with a 2 1/2" system when my whole plan calls for a blower nitrous car with 8.5:1 ratio with forged internals at a constant 12lbs of boost. And yes, I'm one of the idiots who IS going to go to canada to get his computer tuned to rev all the way to 6500rpms so I can use ALL of my RPM band.
I never said a 2 1/2" system wont work, I just said dont dog the 3" -- it gets the job done!Mustangs.. Come to the darkside...<br /><br />The dark side is the path to the shadow of greed. =D

for HIS set up in HIS sig. 3 inch IS too much. he WILL have a problem with volocity with the larger diamiter. he WILL see more PEAK HP do to the less restriction but he could do BETTER if he didn't go that large. do I ahve to draw you a picture to explain?1996 Silver camaro Z28. Pretending no other mods will be added to this.Is this a good set up,if you have a complete 3' exhaust system (CIA headers, 3' in/out Carsound Cat and 3' Flowmaster)and a SLP CAI???<a href=\"http://www.cardomain.com/id/fuelslut98\" target=\"_blank\">http://www.cardomain.com/id/fuelslut98</a><br />Peel out man. ok...im going to add this...it prolly might not make sense to a few but after readin all this...so you scientist guys are saying that a 3" exhaust will not help u but in high rpm's? sooooo look at most of the mods you get for our cars, where do they help? can you figure on ur hands n toes how much hp we make with those and where its at in rpm range? NOPE! lets us build our cars and you stay in v8 land. when we upgrade to an LS1 or LT1 we'll call you. our v6's are so much diff than your v8's. they are not even the same motor and dont in anyway perform the same. im going to run full 3" on mine except headers...headers will come later with the LS1 i might own one day. we have put exhaust on everything we owned and i can promise u ived owned more cars in 1 week then uve owned in ur whole life....3" has performed better on everything. ur lil theory bout the 2.5" pipe is interesting but how about you go get a v6 bird or maro and test it stock then test it with the mods he has and 3" exhaust....intake mods bring in more air...how else you gonna get the extra air out than a bigger more free flowing exhaust??????? im done.99 Bird, blue with 2 pearl white stripes, k&n, airbox mod, TB spacer, 16x8 eagle 077s, 245/45 kumho\'s, 2\" drop, flowmaster w/o cat, 3.73s/eaton locker, pioneer cd player, 1 kenwood 10\" sub and a pioneer 760, 5% tint, RT billet control arms

I love it. Some of you guys are clueless, especially
the ones that keep harping on the 3" exhaust.
You STILL do NOT understand the difference between
free flow and resonance tuning.
NOBODY is able to answer the questions, therefore
it is obvious you're a bunch of kids that yap on
message boards and take the hype as golden.
It amazes me how some of you can't grasp the concepts,
and try to reason with bull****.
FREE FLOWING smaller diameter setups work better than
average flowing large diameter setups!
READ THE DAMN POSTS! Stop replying with your two cent
engine building degree.
I can assure you I've built, tuned and dyno'd more
engines than you've dreamt.
Get out of the V8 comparison because it makes
no difference. These replies are really showing
your ignorance about tuning.
Do yourselves a favor and visit a tech forum and
try and pull this crap. I recommend www.camaroz28.com

I can assure you there are engine builders, engineers,
pro drag racers, and dyno operators that will shut
most of you up with one line.Welcome to the Internet where everyone\'s a mechanic and has a 10 second car.<br /> <a href=\"http://www.gmthunder.com\" target=\"_blank\">http://www.gmthunder.com</a> <br /> <a href=\"http://www.rudyhelds.com/Customer_Rides/80_Camaro_Z28.htm\" target=\"_blank\">http://www.rudyhelds.com/Customer_Rides/80_Camaro_Z28.htm</a> <br />When the green flag drops, all the bull**** stops.

ok you call us that but you are still here?? and you call us immature...everyone has their own opinion and i put mine in so imma step back and watch u YAP about your assumptions...i dont need to visit any websites, ive got experience and no scientist will ever tell me diff. i dont go by wat other ppl say i go by wat ive done and how i feel. go back to camaroz28.com and talk about it there we dont have time for you here.99 Bird, blue with 2 pearl white stripes, k&n, airbox mod, TB spacer, 16x8 eagle 077s, 245/45 kumho\'s, 2\" drop, flowmaster w/o cat, 3.73s/eaton locker, pioneer cd player, 1 kenwood 10\" sub and a pioneer 760, 5% tint, RT billet control arms

no. what you gues are making is assumptions. What he is making are YEARS of proven theory that the best bilders are useing TO THIS DAY. The ones that do not belive us by now never will. We could take a stock 3.8 and put 3 on it and dyno. Then do it our way. Make more power. then go test at the 1/4 and perform better and you all would still not belive it1996 Silver camaro Z28. I also agree with all of your points in this thread. You are the only person I have found that could explain exhaust tuning in such a way that a child could understand! It bewilders me that one must continue to argue with scientific facts that you have posted. I actually find it quite funny just how ignorant people can be.
Thank you, Adrenaline_Z, for sharing your knowledge and experience with us! With your permission, I'd like to cut and paste many of your replies in the case such discussion was to arise on my website. Of course, you will be credited for the content. I think it would be too difficult to point someone to this thread and read through all the bickering and BS just to find the facts. I would recommend to the moderators to either do the same or delete the BS replies in this thread. ;)
For those of you who want to continue to argue with what Adrenaline_Z has presented, go back to school and learn something!
