  • New Smog Tests Going to Wipe Out Most of the Older cars???

Me and my buddy was talking about the new smog tests that they've been having since last year. The ones with the dyno rollers so the car is under load when testing. He says ALL cars have to pass the same emissions standards. Doesn't this mean that all the 70's, 80's, and even some 90's cars will all get denied registrations???

    This is California BTW.

That's what I was thinking was going to happen.

    Either way its ridiculous now.

Cars that have no emissions controls on them will be exempt, kindof like how cars that didn't come with seat belts still dont have to have them to be inspectable.

thats not the question at hand. Its how the cars that HAS emission control is going to pass.

I'm confused as to what you are asking. So...what are you asking?

How are they going to pass? If they are clean and pass,,then they pass. If they don't pass, they don't pass. Nothing more.

I just took my car to get emissions tested the other week (Illinois). My car failed. I passed two out of the three tests. Major pain in the ***..

they should worry more about trucks and aircraft. They put out a hell of a lot more polution than cars ever will....How many of you hve seen truck with black smoke pouring out of the exhaust pipes?

Exactly. How many of you see that coming out of car on an everyday basis?

Emission standards are not the same for all cars. Some vehicles produce more or less emissions based upon their configuration. Take for instance a 95 honda accord and a 95 chevy pickup. The allowable passable emissions for the Honda are considerably lower than that for the Chevy. In California vehicles that are 30 years or older are exempt from smog inspection. I do emission testing in California and one of the hardest things to do is to tell the customer they have failed the test for a bad gas cap.

What about an 79 Caprice, an 86 IROC, a 95 LT1, and a 99 Camaro V6? Each one of these have different standards from each other? OBD, OBD1, OBD2? Or does it depend of each specific car? Category?

I'm asking cuz my friend's 95 Rodeo barely passed and the guy he smogged it at says it's the for all cars.

All cars 96 and newer they just plug it into the computer (OBD-II). It takes a minute at the most. pre-96 years have to get hooked up to the machine, and tested at different RPMs. They hook a tube to the exhaust and get all the readings that way.

All cars have different standards, according to year, make, model, engine size, california or federally certified and so on. The standard is not the same for all cars. 1996 and newer cars have to tested the same way as cars 1995 and older, unless the vehicle is over 30 years old, the only thing different is that on 96 and newer vehicles the computer system(obd II) has to be checked to make sure that it has ran and passed all of the emission monitors(computer generated test of a particular portion of the emission system) in theory if all of the monitors have ran and passed the car should pass emission testing...sounds good in theory...however the probe still has to be put in the tailpipe and the exhaust gasses analyzed..this is true for all cars that have to under go a california smog test. The type of test that the car undergoes is different depending on where the car is registered. If the car is registered in an enhanced area(where there is a high level of pollution as in L.A) then the car must be tested on a dyno, If the car is registered in a very rural area where there is very little pollution then it is not tested on a dyno but is tested at 2500 RPM and at idle. The main difference between the 2 tests is that on a dyno where the the car is tested under simulated driving conditions NOX is measured.

Too bad that the dyno used in smog testing is only about 25 to 30 horse
