Looking at two catbacks for the 3.8. I Need a system with wicked sound and good performance. The Edelbrock is around $250 right now, and the Flowmaster $415, is the extra cash worth the flowmaster?

That's basically a matter of opinion. You'll just have to get clips of the sounds of both of them. And decide for yourself..2000 Firebird. Edelbrock does not come with tips. I am considering switching from Flowmaster to Edelbrock. The biggest problem with Flowmaster mufflers is the annoying drone that you get.Matt
2000 Firebird

FullThrottleV6.com

I have an edelbrock, and I am very pleased. In short, edelbrock is a little quieter, and flowmaster is louder. As far as performance they are about the same. (No results I have seen say either one to be better.)

I have a flowmaster and it is really good, sounds great and gave good performance. I dont know what flowmaster you are looking at but the catback I got was 271.00 it is the one that is made for the 3.8 and comes with nice looking tips. I would only go with flowmaster just because I like their exhaust. good luck.white 1996 camaro 3800: flowmaster American thunder cat back. hypertech 160* stat, and manual fan switch

Hey Hazz Matt,
Just wondering on the drone. Do you have the American Thunder system made specifically for the 3.8 or do you have a different one. I am considering the 17358 Flowmaster system, but if it drones on the highway I would not get it.PRESENT CARS
04 Chrysler Crossfire
96 Black Bonneville (winter car)
98 Plymouth Minivan (wife\'s)

I have a Flowmaster 80 with a "custom" 3 inch I-pipe. It drones the worst on the highway at 70mph for me. 65mph is pretty quiet. It's actually kinda odd. From 55 to 65, it starts to get quieter, then 65 to 70 it get's louder, then it kinda levels off and get's quiter to about 80mph. If you were to plot a graph of volume versus mph, it would look somewhat sinusoidal, but 70mph would be higher than the other peaks. After about 85 it starts to get louder again, but in a linear fashion.
EDIT: I don't think the pipe that you use is going to have too much effect on drone. The problem with the Flowmaster mufflers are that they really aren't mufflers. Yeah, they do muffle the sound a little bit, but they don't have any sound dampening material in them whatsoever. They just rely on destructive interference, which is why I think the volume behaves the way it does. The newer 3.8 kit has a resonator in it, and may behave a little better on the highway. Before I added the 3 inch pipe, and I only had the muffler, I put a resonator in the I-pipe. It mainly smoothed out the sound, and only made a dent in the overall volume.

they are talking about the annoying monotonous ring to the exhaust when cruising at a certain speed that causes your brain cells to bounce off each other, causeing acute psychotic behavior and feelings of driving your car off of the road to make the pain go away.

Yup, that's the drone, and this is why he should get Edelbrock. :D

You just answered your own question. There is a difference between wanting increased power and a better tone, and having to listen to an outboard motor sound when you are traveling over long distances.Matt
2000 Firebird

FullThrottleV6.com

Does anyone have the Flowmaster kit with the resonator included? I am interested if there is any drone with the complete kit and nothing else.PRESENT CARS
04 Chrysler Crossfire
96 Black Bonneville (winter car)
98 Plymouth Minivan (wife\'s)
