  • my exhaust sounds like %$#&

ok, so i got the Flowmaster American Thunder Cat-back system and had it installed

it definately sounds better than the stock exhaust.. but the .. i guess its called rasping (i'm a newbie, bear with me) is still there and seems even louder.. that and the exhaust simply doesnt sound nearly as good as other exhausts i've heard sound clips of online.. even clips of the same system that i got..

now this is a horrible recording.. made it onto a tape then recorded the tap with computer microphone.. but you get the idea from listening to it, its not very loud at all.. and the rasping (?) is common.. this is just running at idle and revving while in park

Did you do full headers and cat as well? Or just the catback? If you did only the catback, don't expect tremendous sound improvements, you only fixed about a third of the system as far as exhaust flow goes. Did you go with a 2.5" or a 3" system? That will make a difference as well.

Also, never count on professionally recorded soundclips presented by companies, all advertisemetns are made to make a product appear as great as it can. Welcome to marketing 101.

Your exhaust will never sound as good as the ones in the clips that are made unless you have your own sound studio, high $$ recording equipment and a ton of money to throw into your car to work on intake/exhaust.

Did you do anything to your intake as well? When you apply a catback, the idea is to help free up the flow of the exhaust. If you didn't do your intake, catalytic converter and headers, you haven't really done a lot to the system, so don't expect huge results.

Also, I just noticed you said the exhaust rasps at idle too. Check for exhaust leaks, did you use the clamps provided in the kit or did you weld your exhaust. Clamps are known to leak, sometimes badly.

Ok well for one that doesn't sound like a flowmaster exhaust system. That sounds like the little Flowtech muffler with single twin tip that I put on my car before I knew anything about cars. Sounds like your not getting very much airflow at all. I only did the muffler and back and my car sounded 10 times better than stock without doing cat or headers, so don't let these people tell you doing a catback only won't change anything majorly. Make sure they welded the catback onto your cat don't settle for clamps ever, they leak and aren't worth the hassle. Took me almost a year to find all the leaks when I got my exhaust first put on. Traced every single leak back to clamps that aren't worth a damn.
