  • Y Pipe brackets..too tight?

Well my Y pipe has been leaking really bad, due to the brakets and bolts..the problem with the bolts was there was not anough thread on them so they were tight but the bolts would float around...I added more washers on each side and cranked them down...they dont move now...sounds better/feels better...but is it possible to make them too tight? Is there a certain taughtness they need to be at....also what can be used instead of a bunch of washers...also originally after doing this, at idle, my steering wheel would shake, bad...then when I accelerated it would go away, and when turning right I would hear a grumble and scrape type noise...usually only when slowing down or letting off the gas...I thought maybe it was the nut on the bolt of the Y-pipe hitting a front control arm?? I think i washed the car with a pressure washer and it kinda went away, so maybe something in the way...dont know...just need to know how to seal up the Y pipe clamps correctly, they I might not have clearance problems. Thanks

Autobahn + cruise control at 90mph = lots of dead bugs adhered to the front of the car.

pressure washer is fine if you know how to use it. dont get close and dont stream... you have to spray.

first off, the bolts. you need to pick up some full length threaded bolts (same length and thread) so you don't run out of room and so you can throw those washers away. to tight is really only when you bend the flange. and about the pressure washer, any stupid person can make something simple into a problem. i have heated pressure washers at my shop and that along with industrial car wash soap and degreaser for those bugs, they are god's gift to man. the washers are not soap feed by the way which i like. and also about the noises you hear, get under the hood and look at your steering column and see if you can find rub marks and if you want, look under the car for hitting at your tranny and other places. things like your y-pipe and steering column might just need to be adusted.
