well guys, i built my intake and i got a webpage up for it. i hope i can help at least some of you out. i had a hard time looking for a webpage like this when i was building my own and never found one so i had to make my own intake up--not knowing if it would work or not. but if you are interested in a about $100 job, check it out...hope it helps some of ya'll out and i think it's near as good as slp's $250+ CAI. peace.
ya, i assume cold air is better, since the most expensive superchargers have coolers on them...i just don't really understand it when your engine is freaking hot anyway, know what i mean? btw, do you have any times to show the diff in your car before and after the slp CAI? thx, i'd like to know...my CAI dropped my 0-60 mph by .9 of a second...just wondering if yours helped you that much or more. thx.
I can tell you from experience that the temprature of the air going into the intake makes a HUGE difference. If you look at the pics of the home brew CAI I built you can see that it sucks the air in from right behind the radiator. It works great in the Minnesota fall and spring (took it off for winter) but summer is absolutly brutal to it. When I autotap it, the power just drops off after the intake temp reaches about 105* and at 130* it is just sluggish.
Now you may say, "But mine isn't behind the radiator, it will get plenty of cool air."
The worst heat build-up under the hood happens when you are in stop and go, or parked. I just drove the car with this intake setup 5,000 miles through the western US. While climbing desert mountains the coolant would get as high as 230*, the tranny 220*, the intake 150*. But when I parked the car after a long drive, the temps got even worse. It was hot enough to melt the rubber on the filter.
Now I'm not saying that yours will melt, it probably won't. What I am saying is that in stop and go it is going to suck. If you stop at a store, and need to really gas it to get back in traffic, it is going to suck. If a mustang GT pulls up next to you at a long stop light....
You get the point.
I am just glad that my MTI intake is on its way to my house right now. I can give you some air temp/flow diffrences in a few days if you would like.
